Fire Fallow Cultivation (2017-03-27)

In the early morning hours as the sun begins to lighten, dawn slowly crawling into the sky, she sits on the veranda and breathes. Morning dew glistening on the grass, bird song filtering from the treetops.

For a few moments she can imagine that she is a child once more, those simpler happier times. When the house was fuller than just her and Shizune and the ever present ANBU guards, when the silence would be broken by the sounds of her family beginning to awaken.

Instead stands a copse of trees, the youngest nearly two decades old–for her cousin, Kohari–the next youngest after that for Nawaki.

Hers will be the last tree planted here. The end of a tradition, the end of a clan.

For a few moments, Tsunade drinks her tea and imagines.

Of the Lucky Seven brats–Hatake included–it’s obvious that the Uchiha brat is the least troublesome. She loves Naruto, and it’s not just professionalism that has her keep bringing Kakashi and Shikako back from their stupidly persistent death wishes, but Sasuke is the least problematic and she’s not ungrateful for that.

Of course, he still is a Lucky Seven brat: least troublesome does not mean not troublesome whatsoever.

“It’s a routine patrol,” she says to the impassive ceramic face of ANBU Hawk, “it’s been run every day for decades! Probably since Konoha itself was founded!”

Still, ANBU Hawk’s face does not change. His posture, though, slouches just that tiniest bit.

She softens her tone, “Better for it to be discovered than not, of course, I just don’t know how this could have stayed hidden for so long.”

Neither of them mention the Sharingan. The whole point of ANBU Hawk is anonymity.

Before, Uchiha in ANBU were sent out immediately on ops. An Uchiha on a routine ANBU patrol would have been inefficient, underutilizing their abilities… or so Danzo would have said.

If there are any hidden caches and tunnels that only a Sharingan can see around the Hokage’s residence…

“Bodyguard duty for you,” Tsunade says, and tries to make it sound like punishment.

Seeing her face on the mountain–alongside her grandfather’s, her granduncle’s, her sensei’s, and that Namikaze brat’s–she thinks about legacies. About responsibilities and inheritances and the cloying, clawing threads that tie her down.

Konoha was her home. Konoha was her hell. Konoha is in her blood, in her heart, in her bones. In every word she speaks and every person she heals and every desk she shatters under her fist. All the paperwork blurring beneath her eyes, every face that looks up to her, every building every weapon every tree.

She is Hokage, she is Senju, she is Konoha.

Konoha was not just one clan’s dream, Konoha is not just one clan’s inheritance.

Shizune adjusts to living in the village easily enough, but Shizune has always been adaptive. It helped on the road, when Tsunade was more drunkard than mentor, and it helps now when Tsunade has to allocate more and more of the hospital’s running to her first apprentice.

First apprentice. How strange to think of Shizune that way when she is more than that–her confidante, her friend, practically her niece–and yet it’s not inaccurate.

Tsunade never thought she’d have a second apprentice, but there’s something about that Haruno girl. Potential, yes, but a joy and love for life that she can barely remember having herself.

She certainly never thought she’d have third one, and not even for medicine at that, but the Uchiha brat has an eye for administration. She’s not just talking about his Sharingan, either, though that certainly helps with the paperwork.

Tsunade was raised to be head of a waning clan, groomed for the position, no matter how futile it turned out to be. Sasuke never had that.

He was the spare, the youngest. A child with a hyper-competent older brother, a fully functioning clan, an entire infrastructure that had no need for him.

And yet.

There is no formal invitation. She does not leave confidential information lying around, though it’s not as if there’s much of a Senju clan to manage anyway.

But if she voices her decision making processes out loud more often. If she’s become observant of customs long set aside. If she has two cups of tea prepared for the early morning hours, well.

Everyone adapts eventually.

In the backyard of the Hokage’s residence is a copse of trees, a holdover from a past era.

She remembers digging for every single tree: scoops of soil in clumsy toddler hands, crescents of dirt beneath her nails as she clutched her newly orphaned brother close.

Trying so hard not to cry on Nawaki’s because it would devastate her if his tree withered from salt. (Dan should have a tree. A few months more, maybe, but she’s done with pleading for an impossibility).

She came back long enough to plant Kohari’s tree (and regret that she didn’t know what the Uzumaki traditions were) and leave with Shizune in tow.

It might be blasphemous, might enrage all of her Senju ancestors, but what does she care what a bunch of dead people think? If she wants to have an Uchiha plant her tree, well, who is going to stop her?

She’s the last of her clan; she wants someone who will remember her as such.

A/N: Less Tsunade and Sasuke bonding and more implied bonding and character analysis? Hope you enjoy anyway, @future-tongue!

Fire fallow cultivation, aka slash-and-burn agriculture, is when fields are burned so that the ash can enrich the soil for future crops to grow. šŸ˜€

So if Shikako is Iron Man, does that make lost-everyone -around -him Sasuke into Captain America? Or mystical-family-power Thor? RAGEKyuubi mode is the Hulk? Oh! Not-worthy-of-heirloom-weapon is Kakashi isn’t it?? (I know it wasnt supposed to be a one to one comparison but still).

Hm, I hadn’t really thought it all the way through but let’s see:

Ibiki is definitely the Nick Fury equivalent (with Aoba and Anko as the Phil Coulson and Maria Hill equivalents).

Ino is probably the Black Widow equivalent–I’m thinking her codename is either Belladonna or Aconite or Oleander (very poisonous, but very pretty flowers).

I was actually thinking Sakura would be the Thor equivalent–in the original comics form? Where Thor-the-hero wasn’t the literal Norse god, but someone who had received Thor’s powers by being worthy of wielding Mjolnir. In this case, Sakura has received Tsunade’s powers by wielding… I don’t know, powerful gloves? (I think the Sannin are the actual ancient alien deities.)

And while RAGE!Kyuubi-fied Naruto would be an admittedly great Hulk, I was leaning more towards him being Captain America. Or… Captain Uzushio? And then have Sasuke be Winter Soldier… Sharingan Soldier? The story line for them aren’t nearly as perfect a match as Shikako as Iron Hart, but it does put Danzo in the excellent position of Hydra leader so…

I don’t think Kakashi is an Avenger. The point of it was to have the Konoha Twelve be the Avengers (and the Akatsuki be the Young Avengers/Big Hero 6), and Kakashi wouldn’t really fit that dynamic? Unless…

Is Kakashi Deadpool?

… no, wait… um… probably he’s more like Wolverine–old and immortal and tired of everything, but goddamnit he will adopt all the angry children. All of them.

“delicacy in layers”, friendship is a mutual con verse, dos!! have fun writing and thanks for doing the prompt!! (i do hope the ask got sent)

Because Friendship Is A (Mutual) Con ā€˜verse is so heavily based on Leverage [which, again, I cannot recommend more highly. It’s on both Hulu and Netflix] this would have to be another one of those intricate, wheels within wheels, Rube Goldberg-esque heists where each part of the mission is steadily foiled but it turns out that success actually relies on being caught somehow. But because I am not as skilled a writers as the writing team from the show, I don’t what exactly that would be.

It would be grifter centric, which means its probably Kakashi centric because of all of the members of extended Team Seven he’s the only one who canonically grifted someone (though Sukea is a filler episode/omake).

Then again, Naruto’s oft forgotten flare for henge would make him a good grifter, too… They probably all overlap in roles eventually, but to start off with probably Kakashi is their main grifter (and he is the man of many masks so…)

Or maybe it’s about a grifting-heavy mission. All the different ways the team members successfully (or not) grift.

I’m also getting very strong kimono vibes. Like the fancy multi-layered kind that nobility wear which kind of harkens to this post but doesn’t necessarily require it so…

I have a feeling that this is an Uchiha related mission, probably Itachi but possibly Madara/Obito instead, and Sasuke’s ā€œgriftā€ is ā€œhimself but not a criminalā€ so… or maybe that’s one of the complications? Like, Sasuke’s ā€œroleā€ is ā€œUchiha heirā€ but then Itachi shows up and that puts his ā€œcoverā€ in danger because Itachi wasn’t supposed to be here and now they’re in danger of the mark catching wind that there are two Uchiha heirs running around. (And Itachi is not a criminal in this AU, but he’s definitely not as unaware as Sasuke probably hopes).

Yeah, that feels better.

I also want to involve Kurenai somehow because layers invokes genjutsu so maybe it’s something like:

Kurenai, a famous actress, is marrying Asuma, the son of a highly ranked politician, but someone is trying to interfere with the happy couple via blackmail or something and it’s Team Seven’s mission to find/destroy the evidence that is being used to blackmail and also make sure the wedding stays on track?

Maybe this is a mission as a favor/wedding gift to Asuma? Like, Asuma doesn’t quite know about Team Seven’s criminal inclinations, but he knows something is worrying Kurenai and he mentions it to Kakashi (who had awkwardly opted out of being Best Man–it’s Gai, btw) who is like. I can do this thing for my friend.

Yeah! I am really liking this now šŸ˜€

Anyway here’s the summary (short to match the Seven Deadly Sins installment):

Delicacy In Layers

All relationships have complications. Team Seven is proof of that.

I feel like, in Remember to Sleep, Sasuke would be a good choice for the “does cybernetics make you less human” question, where the tropes about getting cybernetics make you less empathetic and more evil come into play. Especially with the “family madness” that comes with the Uchiha Sharingan and Mangekyou stuff. Especially since Sasuke seems like a generally good person, before the curse seal and the desire for the Mangekyou sort of screw him up in a major way.

anonymous: Oh, I love the Reminder to dream verse! What about kakashi in that AU? and does Shikako ever create robots or AI?

Yeah, that sounds about right. There’s a lot of ā€œthe human brain isn’t designed to do thisā€ in regards to the Sharingan, and their clan history is full of… dubious self/family-experimentation. (I think the Byakugan’s a little different, mostly because the Hyuuga probably have satellites which their Byakugan link to as opposed to the Sharingan which is entirely self-contained).

Ooh, Kakashi. I actually think he’s a private detective–he thinks he’s Noir-esque, but really he’s kind of just like in canon where he’s a walking disaster of a human being. I don’t think he has the Sharingan, per se, but Obito might have given him something LIKE the Sharingan? Or only one part of the overly engineered cybernetic amalgamation that is the Sharingan. Which is still enough to get some of the neat tricks, with a significant decrease in the mental problems.

Also, I like the idea that while he’s frequently on really tawdry or minor jobs (find my cat, is my spouse cheating on me, etc. etc.) he became a private detective in order to figure out the truth of what happened to the Uzumaki-Namikaze family. Which puts him on track to enter the story since, hey, there’s an android that maybe looks like your dead teacher. And that might also draw in Sasuke into the story since I imagine the Uchiha keep an eye on Kakashi (but so long as he’s seen as a frumpy string bean no one really thinks he’s a threat) so they tend to assign it to the rookie. Which is obviously Sasuke in this case.

If Shikako does make robots/AI, they’re probably the deer summons. Or she names her security system Heijomaru, she has the equivalent of a Roomba named Nagaoka, and Gemmei is her own coding language? I’m not sure.

this isnt a fake fic prompt but more of a have you ever thought about what would happen if sasunaru was canon in dos and how shikako would react to it? (post-canon maybe?)

Yes? I mean I have briefly considered how the SasuNaru ship in DoS would differ from in canon, but I never consider any ship canon unless its actually written by SQ or actual canon (for example Yoshino/Shikaku).

I don’t think Sasuke and Naruto having a relationship would necessarily be something Shikako is overly surprised by, but its not as if she’s preoccupied with the live lives of her friends–after all, she didn’t know when Shikamaru and TenTen started dating but she didn’t have a huge reaction either.

Especially if its post-canon. SQ has already said DoS (and Shikako) are running up to a particular point in canon, so the travesty that is Chapter 700 wouldn’t apply which means Shikako has no expectations of what canon relationships Naruto may end up with and even less expectations about DoS Naruto’s relationships.

So yes, I’ve thought of it, but nothing extensive or interesting.

I.. had the weirdest dream of Shikako and Shikamaru as the two main leads in the Barbie: Princess and the Pauper film (my childhood!! Haha) I legit had the entire film play in my sleep. It was oddly satisfying/amusing. (I actually went to rewatch the movie when I woke up. Super cringey CGI, but still enjoyable haha. The songs are stuck in my head for whatever reason) (Also… Princess&Pauper!AU prompt? Just to make this ask relevant haha. (You can ignore this if you want))

Cool? Not one of my own childhood movies, but I was always fond of how the Barbie movie franchise looked at any and all fairy tales and was like–hell yeah, we’re doing that somehow. Doesn’t matter if there aren’t any female characters traditionally, stick a heroine in that story.

Can’t really think of how a Princess/Prince&Pauper!AU would work because who looks enough like someone else to…

Oh, wait… Sasuke and Sai?

Maybe that’s Sai’s fairy tale origin in Tamed?

apart from shikako and tetsuki, who do you think would be in qprs in the dos verse (or any of your aus) i also agree with the qpp you chose for shikako and i think it would work in an au not decorated with daily death or alive situations. maybe shikako would be in a qpr with both ino and sasuke but ino and sasuke themselves are just friends (or at least until they get to know each other better) if she considered it. (my second choices for shikako’s qpp was essentially naruto/gaara because (1/2)

maybe not necessarily in dos canon, but in your aus focusing on their relationships, it is easy to interpret their relationship as ā€œmore than friendship, but not less than romantic, just something differentā€ (and there i would talk about alterous attraction but i haven’t really explored that term myself a lot more) (2/2)

Oh! I did not know about the term alterous, but I think that’s how I interpret Shikaara–as an ambiguous mix between platonic and romantic. Of course, not in canon but in a canon adjacent AU such as Dreaming of S(omething).

I think Naruto and Shikako are very platonic. Even in my post-series Waking Up Starstruck (which is my attempt to do a Narukako ship) it’s still not all that romantic. And not even because of my interpretation of Shikako as aro/demi, but because I cannot for the life of me understand Naruto’s character. He and I just are not simpatico. :/ I love him but I do not understand him. I don’t know if they would even have a QPR or maintain their less intense friendship.

Naruto and Sasuke’s relationship is too steeped in canon for me to disentangle (SasuNaru was one of my ā€œBaby’s First Shipsā€) so I don’t know if they would have a QPR or a romantic relationship… But I do think Naruto and Haku would have a fantastic QPR in a canon adjacent AU, so at least I know him that much, right?

Let’s see, who else…

As Ino’s co-spouses, Sakura and Sai are not romantic with each other, but they do develop a sweet QPR which is very nice for their triad marriage.

I imagine Team Gai are not romantically interested in each other, but they are the closest thing they all have to family which would easily translate to QPRs. Especially when they’re older and their personalities have matured.

Actually, yeah, if I’m not restricting myself to canon. Then in a canon adjacent AU, that Kiba+ShikakoĀ QPR would definitely exist.

Oh, in the Team Medic!AU (Team One with Sakura, Youbirin, and Jiro passed with a combat medic jounin sensei)–or, at least, the How To Adult Properly series based on it–Team One definitely have QPR because they have no boundaries with each other.

I don’t know who else, this is a big question. There are so many characters that’s like an infinite number of combinations so…

But I do appreciate your question, so thanks for asking, anon šŸ™‚

!!! im also aromantic and in the ace-spectrum and when SQ said that romance was not a thing that’s going to happen in DOS smh i got really happy, i’ve gotten so attached to shikako that i actually headcanon her as aromantic as well and would rather see her in queerplatonic relationships rather than romantic ones (though i can see why the shipping thread in the forums is lively) who do you think would shikako be QPRs with?

I actually quite appreciate that there isn’t any romance in DoS. Which might sound off considering a lot of my DoS fanfic does revolve around various ships, but I’m relieved that canon DoS doesn’t.

My interpretation of Shikako in canon is also aromantic–though for shipping/fic writing purposes I tendĀ to extend that to demi-romantic. Then again, considering how mild my writing expression of romance is, all of my shipping fic could be interpreted as queerplatonic? But I understand what you’re saying (my Trailblazer character Tetsuki is qpp with Ryohei Sasagawa) so let’s see…

I think Shikako and Ino are one step away from a canonical QPR… but it’s one of those ā€œin a kinder worldā€ sort of situation. Even without the oncoming war, both of them (or, at least, Ino does) have clan responsibilities, and I do think Ino is a romantic at heart. She would want a romantic relationship (not necessarily with Shikako, per se) and while I know QPRs aren’t incompatible with romantic relationships, that’s a lot of people to juggle since I do really quite like the triad of Sakura/Ino/Sai (which is at least 2/3 canonical for Naruto and could very well be completely canonical in DoS?)Ā

Alternatively the only other character who I think Shikako is closest to a canonical QPR with is Sasuke. But the problem with that is I cannot help but headcanon that Sasuke is in love with Shikako most likely romantically. So while it’s platonic on Shikako’s end, it’s probably romantic on Sasuke’s, and I don’t think she’d be comfortable with deepening their friendship into a QPR for fear of breaking Sasuke’s heart by not being able to reciprocate his romantic feelings.

Who else… I don’t know. I would have considered Kiba before but not particularly recently and not more than Ino and Sasuke… Yeah. Those are the most canonical potential QPRs.

are you still doing the fake fic challenge? if so, how about dos shikako/sasuke, “we were the kings and queens of promise”?? thanks!

Here’s the thing, anon: I cannot help but automatically relate that song to the Chronicles of Narnia.

Literally, cannot unstick that connection in my brain. It’s on my Once Then Always fanmix for a reason.

So this prompt is definitely Team Seven in Narnia fulfilling the prophecy to overthrow the White Witch. I already touched on it a little over here but I suppose I could go in more depth about this.

Then again, that’d just be me rehashing Once Then Always but with DoS Team Seven instead of the Lost Kids from Descendants and at that point it’s just a matter of tweaking minor details to better match Team Seven, how do they get to Narnia, who (if anyone) would be the betrayer for power, what are their presents from Father Christmas (if any), who gets to be Magnificent vs Gentle vs Just vs Valiant (the answer to that is, in this order, Shikako, Sakura, Sasuke, Naruto) etc. etc.

And that’s kinda… tedious.

Alternatively, the title does invoke King Arthur vibes in the sense that in the hour of the Elemental Nations’ greatest need they will return. Which had also been briefly touched on here.

I guess I can tweak that into BBC Merlin fusion/crossover? Except that chakra and ninjutsu are basically magic and that would get pretty problematic quite easily. And how would that even–Sasuke as Arthur and Shikako as Merlin? But that doesn’t really work?

Um…

Sorry, anon. I know this took me a while to get to and I didn’t even fill it properly :/

(I know I said the ask box is closed for this particular event, but if you want to send in a different prompt and hopefully I can do that one justice. No cheating, everyone else, just this one anon. The event is still closed.)

how would tourmaline feel about kyuubi? would it be in the same light as DOS? (yknow making her powerless, and chakra sensitivity and what not) and would naruto have a human friend that would be trained by tourmaline/obsidian/kakashi in a “do it for her” fashion?

Tourmaline!Shikako doesn’t have the same background with the Kyuubi as DoS!Shikako does, so mostly she’s just very confused by that weird glow in Naruto’s gemstone. Given her powers and her specialty, she make be able to sense the Kyuubi within his gemstone, but until Sasuke makes the connection between that ominous energy and the horrific forces that caused Home World to flee, she doesn’t know what it is.

Arguably, Kakashi is the human that trains himself to protect Naruto.

That being said, given the bijuu are Earth phenomenon, and humans are also Earth phenomenon the Konoha Twelve may have abilities of their own to help them fight though they aren’t nearly as powerful as their DoS versions. Also, I think they’re friends with Naruto. It’s probably because of the size of Beach City and the fact that he isn’t in school for some reason, but Steven seems awfully isolated. Naruto–raised only by Kakashi and his millions of dogs–is definitely enrolled in school.
