Gambling Away the Past, 12!

Gambling Away The Past (part 10/?), 12) things you said when you thought I was asleep

Today is their last in the relative safety of Sangaku Outpost and, by unspoken agreement, all of Team Kakashi have decided to spend the day on separate ventures. Soon enough it’ll be back to being just their squad–best to get their fill of other company while they can.

Not that other company necessarily equates to better company, of course, especially given the way some of those stationed at the outpost still look at Kakashi with barbed, pointed glares, but there are a few people Shikako, at least, wouldn’t mind meeting with again in the future and she knows her teammates feel the same. At the very least, Kakashi certainly doesn’t mind the opportunity to summon his ninken in a more peaceful situation than he’d get to once they’re back on duty.

And so the team spends their last day at the outpost apart, helping out where they can or getting in some last minute training, before returning to their tent for the evening. They’ll leave at dawn, back to the camp that Ikoma-san runs and which Minato-san generally considers home base, before being sent out on their next mission.

And so Shikako isn’t surprised about being the first one back to the tent, late afternoon, nor does she feel at all bad about flopping onto her bedroll and immediately passing out. Exhausted after one last grueling training session for her and Wakakusa beneath Heijomaru’s steely hooves, Sembei-obaasan making less than helpful comments from the side.

A few hours later, she surfaces from the depths of unconsciousness at the proximity of other chakra signatures, but decides not to fully wake up when she recognizes her teammates. Still, their conversation filters down to her in her dozing state, words hushed but no less heated.

“–can’t believe you still think that! After everything she’s done?” Obito’s voice, the magma of his volcano bubbling ominously.

“Sensei thinks so, too,” Kakashi’s voice, a weak defense, barely any crackle in the ozone, “He said to watch her.”

“Because he thinks she’s some kind of secret fuinjutsu prodigy, not because she’s a spy!” retorts Obito.

Rin, as always, tries to break the tension, “Ikoma-san wouldn’t put her on our team if she were, and Minato-sensei approved it. He wouldn’t do that to us,” she reasons.

There is a moment of silence, Kakashi acknowledging and accepting her point, before he says, “Her story is inconsistent–what little of it she does tell us, anyway. How’d she end up near where our mission was? What happened to her previous team?”

The silence that follows this time is much longer.

Not because the answer is hard to think of, but because one particular answer comes to mind too quickly. Shikako can almost pinpoint the moment when each of her teammates stumble upon it: Obito’s volcano going dormant once more, temper doused immediately. Rin’s breath hitching, dual fire and water flickering and rippling in distress. Kakashi’s electricity flattening out the way it does when he knows he’s said something awful, but can’t apologize for it.

They are at war. There is one simple explanation for how a shinobi could end up all alone in enemy territory without any back up.

It’s morbid to think of as such, but how lucky for her that they’ve all come to the obvious, but wrong conclusion.

~

A/N: It takes significantly less time to break a good practice than to stop a bad one and that is no excuse. I’ll have to reform my daily writing behavior from scratch it seems :/

Sorry for the delay, @to-someplace-else!

I sent a prompt but I guess tumblr ate it? Would you ever write about Dipper and Mabel Pines in Narnia? Possibly with Wendy and Stan/Soos to round out the four regents thing, if that was an interesting direction?

Yeah, I definitely did not get this one, to-someplace-else. Thanks for resending it 🙂

Hm, let’s see… if I were to do a Gravity Falls x Narnia crossover… I think it would just be the twins. Don’t get me wrong, I love the other characters, but I think for something like a Narnia misadventure just the twins would be best.

Some things I’ve decided:

This is after the events of the series. Maybe a few years? Teen!Twins, who have spent a few more summers after that disastrous-yet-glorious one acting as mediators between the supernatural and the human in Gravity Falls or even spent a some time helping out on the Stan-o-War.

I don’t think they are there to fulfill the four regents prophecy. Not just for numerical reasons, but because I think it’d be more interesting for them to retain what they’ve learned. They’re coming in as the most experienced travelers to Narnia and I think for Narnia/Aslan to bring them there it must be for that reason.

They are not there to rule, they’re there to help. Or, rather, to offer their services–for payment, of course, never mind that they won’t be able to bring stuff back, they are Stanley Pines’ relatives. Like Eustace and Jill, they do not become king and queen. They are there for a specific purpose/quest.

Or maybe quests, plural? I have two different ideas for what this fic might be? So the first is more lighthearted, a series of “case fics” as it were. The Pines Twins show up frequently during the Pevensie’s reign and are dispatched to solve this or that issue around Narnia. Agents of the crowns, basically. Or Knights. So them asking for payment sort of makes sense if they’re going to come back?

The second is a little bleak, a one shot more likely, set after the Pevensies leave and the Telmarines start to invade/conquer Narnia. They’re not there to rule, they’re there to save lives. They have to teach Narnians–who have, before the Telmarines arrived, been used to being full citizens and have forgotten how to hide from an evil ruler–how to survive. Or they help smuggle Narnians to Archenland who haven’t entirely forgotten the alliance with the Pevensies.

I suppose the two aren’t mutually exclusive?

That being said, while it is a cool idea to play around with I don’t know if I’d actually ever write it… mostly because my Descendants x Narnia crossover fic has been a nonstarter and I don’t know how this one would fare any better.

Hm, sorry to-someplace-else… but do send in more if you feel like it! You know I love answering prompts 😀

Check out the Ask Box Would You Ever!

On the forums dona reminded us of your changeling!Shikako idea. If you still need prompts, could we possibly get something else in that ‘verse? Thank you again for these ask box events!

A/N: Considering dona was the one to prompt it in the first place, it’s not really my idea. But I do enjoy that ‘verse so I’ll see if I can do something with it? It’s more world-building than plot, because I had some ideas about Fae in the world of Naruto that didn’t really fit in a Nara-centric ficlet, so I appreciate the opportunity! 😀

Sometimes–on the very rare occasions where their luck hasn’t set off a ludicrous Rube Goldberg of chaos–Shikako enjoys just… basking in Naruto’s presence.

Eyes closed, face turned towards him, it really is reminiscent of childhood naps on a sunny afternoon.

She is not the first Fae to be captivated by an Uzumaki, and she certainly won’t be the last.

///

The Uzumaki are vibrant–colorful both literally and figuratively–brilliant and beguiling and entirely human.

Normally, when The Court has a guest, the revelry starts on a high point: humans are, after all, easily charmed and quick to ignore their hardships for some carousing. But soon they grow reluctant, body weary, and when they are returned home they always complain about how everyone they’ve ever loved is dead.

So ungrateful.

But Uzumaki guests are eager from start to finish, dancing and drinking as well as any member of The Court, and when they are returned home they hardly blink an eye at the changes around them.

What is a century to a clan known for longevity?

///

Fae are subject to the strictest of rules, the only inhibitor to their preternatural power.

They cannot speak untruths, yes, but that does not mean they cannot deceive. They cannot take what is already claimed, but claims are easy enough to change:

A favor, a name, a face–how simple it is to gain possession of those iron-blooded surface dwellers.

///

No one really remembers much about Kakashi’s mother. It’s true his father was much more infamous, but it’s not entirely the fault of Konoha’s imperfect memory.

After all, it’s from her that Kakashi inherited his penchant for masks.

How unfortunate that he didn’t also inherit the reasoning behind it.

Not that it would matter much: as a changeling, Shikako is free to do as she pleases.

///

The Summer and Winter Courts are forever at war–or, perhaps, are the one and the same just with different adornments.

What do seasons mean to eternal beings? After all, conflict is just another kind of dance.

But the Fae are fickle, not foolish: they send changeling children across the veil for a reason.

///

The Uchiha, as all too clearly proven, were entirely mortal, but fearsome warriors whose reputation impressed even those beyond the forests.

The clan knew better than to get involved with the Fae. Sasuke is just a lone boy carrying the name.

Emotional bonds are the most powerful, crafted not from tangible materials or breakable promises, but from sacrifice.

Blood and heirlooms and secrets exchanged until there can be no more tally of debts, no method to untangle what is owed to who.

All these unwanted, broken orphan boys…

The finest Queen will have the strongest and most loyal of Knights.

~

A/N: Team Seven in the Changeling ‘verse! To be fair, changeling!Shikako doesn’t know about the whole… Fae machinations and turning her team into mortal thralls thing… (゜▽゜;)

Check out the Ask Box Advent Calendar!

Actually, could I prompt you for something in the Gravity Falls universe, by any chance? I discovered that show this summer and I am so. thirsty. for new fic.

Gravity Falls is an amazing show, definitely, but I kind of wonder if maybe it’s too amazing–is such a thing makes sense. Like it’s very comprehensively satisfying–there’s not many loose ends or critical points that I want to change. Kind of like Leverage (which I adore) it’s a perfectly compact blend of world-building and characters that I’m not sure what, if anything, I could do with it. As much as I love Leverage I hardly ever read any fic for it because the show is so much more satisfying.

At most, maaaybe future fic, but even then it’s kind of… or maybe past fic about either one of the Grunkles’ adventures? Hm…

Having considered it, I suppose my question to you would be if you’d want GF universe fic or GF character fic which are very different things indeed.

I mean, canonically, Ford DID travel through endless dimensions–though the “main world” is itself already absolutely fascinating and with a multitude of (im)possibilities, and surely Gravity Falls can’t be the ONLY hot spot of bizarre supernatural activity.

Then again, a huge part of what makes the show so great is the characters and the idea of this family–both blood and found–of misfits loving and supporting each other while also still having conflicts is something that can easily crossover to any AU.

Which is a fairly popular idea given the number of AUs floating around–with fantastic artwork attached!–I think my favorite is the Fullmetal Alchemist crossover/fusion by @mistrel-fox

I don’t really have any fic recs for GF either, so… ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Landsailor (feat. Glen Phillips) by Vienna Teng

Landsailor
Landsailor, sail on time
Rain or shine, I know you can
Cloudraker
Cloudraker, share your finds
All your wonders at my demand

Lightbringer
Tamer of night
Blossom of hours unleashed
Make me a lawbender
All equalized
Saved from the chill and heat
Your power flows through me transformed
Here’s where I was born

Landsailor
Deepwinter strawberry
Endless summer, ever spring
A vast preserve
Aisle after aisle in reach
Every commoner made a king

Earthbreaker
Noble and prized
Feed me beyond my means
Hello worldmaker
Never denied
Build all my wildest dreams
But there’s a storm outside your door
And I’m a child no more

Headless and faceless
Tireless and seamless behind these walls
This is my progress
When you don’t notice my lines at all
I split the world open
Delve ever deeper in my alchemic arts
I crack the ciphers to free up your mind, your life, your heart

Oh landsailor I’m your landsailor
In the bed that we’ve made in the bed that we’ve made
May every nail be shown may every nail be shown
Great lifebringer great lifebringer
The price that we pay the price that we pay
Time that you made it known time that you made it known
I want to be your bride in full oh be my bride in full
Shield my eyes no more shield your eyes no more
Oh I am altered now for good altered now for good
Shield these eyes no more shield these eyes no more

@to-someplace-else: listen to “Landsailor” by Vienna Teng, A:tLA verse.

~

Hm… this one is difficult. Don’t get me wrong, I love Vienna Teng and this song, but as a prompt this seems kind of… too on the nose. Like. This seems like it would be more suited to a… what’s it called when artists do a soundboard-y kind of music video? Almost like an anime opening sequence but not really? Well, whatever that is called. And then it’s just a matter of assigning different “titles” to each of the Gaang and doing little vignettes on them as related to their little bit of verse.

And while I love sticking Tetsuki into pretty much anything, I don’t think even an abstract of this would work so well for an Iron Will ficlet. Like, she doesn’t know she’s out of place and she’s way too anti-social to be working behind the scenes for the Gaang in the way that this song expresses during bridge. Maybe a different SI!OC–one who knows what’s at stake and is keeping an eye on the Gaang to make sure they succeed?

I’d say this is an Uncle Iroh song, but that seems almost too unbalanced. Is it a Mai who can see the future and knows that her friend will fail–must fail, for the good of the world–but wants to make sure she’s not so utterly destroyed in the process? Is this a Lu Ten lives but must pretend to be dead in order to ensure his father isn’t assassinated by his uncle and the Gaang succeed!AU?

Actually, that last one sounds pretty fun. And, like, can you imagine Lu Ten partnering up with June who is initially annoyed by him and then it turns into reluctantly fond? And how cool would that be in the Iron Will ‘verse, too? An entire B-sides to that series… which would make it the C-sides of the Gaang’s adventures? I dunno.

And while he is also a (self-)exiled Fire Nation prince, Lu Ten’s story would be different. He doesn’t have Iroh to guide him, no ship and navy crew to ferry him where he wants to go. But maybe he’s not entirely alone after the attempted assassination cover up (because headcanon that Ozai had Lu Ten killed and had it covered up because he was in battle and thus plausibly deniable as KIA):

Maybe one or two of his squad mates also go MIA because even though Lu Ten’s a poncy prince, he’s still their friend. And maybe an enemy earth bender who sees the Fire Nation crown prince and thinks this is a premium opportunity to take him hostage and ransom back except then Lu Ten’s “death” is made official even though “what the hell, there’s no body” and earth bender realizes that Fire Nation internal politics is ~awful~. And then they stumble into June who’s originally on the weirdly well-paying hunt for “unnamed Fire Nation army defectors” and she’s just like, “you’re incompetent and obvious, I guess I’ll stick around because if you’re really the prince then you can pay me more and if you can’t then at least I’ll be on hand to collect the bounty instead of some other hunter.” Do they eventually get a swamp bender? Maybe.

Basically, Lu Ten builds his own crew of outsiders to help fight against FIre Nation tyranny.

And in the end, even if he does get reunited with his father, he decides not to officially “come back to life” because he enjoys traveling around and having adventures with his friends than staying at home and being Fire Lord. Maybe he and his friends are the first officers of the United Forces?

Sorry, to-someplace-else, I think I’ve managed to turn this beautiful, uplifting song into “Lu Ten and Friends’ Adventures”

Prompt: Windy Strife interacting with Naruto’s team (especially Kakashi). Outside pov?

A/N: ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ Windy Strife!

Unto The Climate, part three (2017-12-08)

The problem with Fuyu Namikaze is that she appeared so publicly.

She is not some spy abducted in the quiet of the night, plausible deniability erasing her existence, or a conspirator whose own paranoid privacy wraps the noose around her neck.

She appeared on the rooftop where the Hokage and Konoha’s most infamous missing-nin were fighting, awakened by the Shinigami itself.

But even if secrecy could be enforced amongst the witnesses–not so unbelievable, given they were mostly ANBU and high ranking shinobi at the scene–she was then brought to the hospital, a screaming, uncontrollable ruckus right there in patient intake.

And while, true, it was just one incident in the midst of already so much chaos–an invasion does not immediately end simply because one side has been defeated–people saw her, spread the news.

People want a hero.

Ibiki shakes his head, considering the woman on the other side of the one-way mirror.

Fuyu Namikaze is not a hero.

But she looks enough like the last one that maybe they can make do.

“Send him in,” he orders, eyes never leaving Namikaze.

“Which one?” Anko asks, irreverent as always–but she’s not wrong: there are two options that Ibiki thinks will give the most information about their guest.

He glances over at his second in command. No doubt she is both celebrating and coping with the death of her former sensei–it’s been a hard couple of weeks for her. She deserves this.

“You choose.”

Windy stares at the cup of tea in hir hands–paper, of course, don’t want to risk giving the prisoner something breakable, something that can produce shards. It really is quite a nice interrogation room: everything soft and subdued and only slightly uncomfortable. Like the ShinRa conference rooms.

Given the number of shifts Winter had tailing the department heads, this is practically his second home. He might very well take a nap.

There’s a soft pulse of magic then a click–the door unlocking. Zie wonders who they’ll send in: the grizzled hard ass to intimidate her or the kindly old man who only wants for her to help him help her?

Frankly, Windy has no idea why they’re trying anything given zie can’t understand a word they’re saying.

The boy who enters is just exactly that: a boy, no older than thirteen–fourteen maybe if he’s the same kind of late bloomer as hir brother–and yet he’s wearing the green flak jacket of a trooper.

Ah, appealing to her emotional side, then.

The boy stares, mouth agape, expression honest and honestly hopeful.

Zie regrets the comparison to hir brother, now. Damn it, they’re good.

Clearly they’re looking for something, so zie might as well give them what they want.

“Sit,” Windy says, which doesn’t prompt anything in the boy until zie gestures to the chair beside hir. Across the table is too distant, reserved for her interrogators, they want to see her be softer, more vulnerable.

The boy sits. He doesn’t stop staring.

Zie’s already reaching for her dull pencil and pad of paper, “Name?” zie asks, writing down the Wutaian character that they used–thankfully that seems to be the same–before sliding both over to the boy.

He writes, trying to maintain visual of hir at the same time which is… some kind of feeling… before returning them.

Maelstrom.

Now that’s a solid Strife name.

Kakashi waits.

What a bizarre thing to do.

Normally he’s the one that people wait for, but not today it seems.

Anko probably did that on purpose. He just waits and watches in the viewing room, his teacher’s son–his student–and his teacher’s… sister? Relative?… interact and it’s doing… something to him.

Yeah, given the smirk on Anko’s face, she definitely did it on purpose.

Ibiki knocks on the glass–Naruto startles, the prisoner doesn’t–signaling time’s up. Kakashi’s mildly surprised: it’s the quietest he’s ever seen Naruto, most people would do a lot for that.

However Naruto, perhaps overly mindful of how new his chuunin status is–or, more likely, feeling self conscious of the casual kindness the woman has shown him–gets up to leave.

But not before the woman reaches out and brushes a hand against his cheek, hand glowing a pale green.

Kakashi can feel his own eye narrow in suspicion.

“What the fuck was that?” Anko spits out, stepping over to where the controls for the room’s seals are, “We’re at level two, she shouldn’t be able to do any jutsu in there.”

Ibiki says nothing before Naruto returns, no doubt eager to claim a spot in front of the one way mirror to resume his staring.

“What did she do to you?” Ibiki asks him, a quick jolt of chakra to disrupt any possible genjutsu.

Naruto, showing his quickly won loyalty–not exactly a good trait, especially in front of the head of T&I–bristles at the accusatory tone. “Nothing, scar-head, she was really nice!”

“She can’t even speak our language,” Anko refutes.

“That doesn’t mean she can’t be nice,” Naruto starts, at which point Kakashi tunes out.

Maybe it was nothing.

Naruto did have a bruise on his face earlier–a yellowing remnant of his fight against Sand’s jinchuuriki–which is no longer there.

Then again, Naruto does have a known healing factor; maybe it was nothing.

“Your turn, Hatake,” Ibiki interrupts, silencing the argument–literally, it just turns into one of stuck out tongues and ugly faces–and adding a simple warning, “Watch yourself.”

Yeah, he doesn’t believe it was nothing either.

Anko remembers the Yondaime vaguely–or, as vaguely as can be done when his face is carved into the mountain overlooking the village–which makes sense given it’s been over a decade and the time before that she had been… well.

That fucking snake bastard, not even an eternity in the Shinigami’s stomach is enough suffering.

She doesn’t have that weird nostalgia about him that some of the other shinobi have, and certainly none of the creepy starry-eyed zeal that the civilians do, but what she remembers of him is probably not the full picture.

Better than that snake bastard could mean anything: kinder, more charismatic, more competent, stronger, smarter, hell even better looking!

(Stone isn’t exactly the best medium for glamour shots, but if Fuyu Namikaze really is so shockingly similar, well. She’s certainly easy on the eyes, is all Anko will say about a current prisoner.)

Definitely a better teacher, that’s for sure, and Anko will never admit to being jealous of Kakashi Hatake but she’d certainly trade if that were an option.

It’s clear Fuyu Namikaze is bringing up all sorts of emotions in that deadened heart of his. Probably this next bit will be more revealing about him than her, but might as well, right?

… except as soon as Kakashi walks through the unlocked door, Fuyu Namikaze bugs the fuck out: face draining of color, feet flat on the ground and retreating as far back as she can get. She makes a motion–grabbing for something on her back that isn’t there, a weapon maybe?–before picking up the chair and chucking it at him.

It’s not much. Chairs aren’t exactly aerodynamic and these ones even less so–weighted to make it harder for prisoners to do shit exactly like this–Kakashi easily shifts out of the way, but it’s clear on the tiny patch of visible expression that he’s confused as fuck.

“Hey, what’s going on?” the brat asks, probably more to make noise than anything else.

It’d be funny except then Fuyu Namikaze’s hands begin to glow, a darker, cooler green–blue, almost–and Ibiki barks, “Level three, now!”

Anko complies, activating the stronger set of seals on the room. Level two prevents jutsu use–or, at least, it should–level three knocks out the inhabitants… or, at least, it should…

Kakashi goes down pretty easily–he’s nearly as famous for chakra exhaustion as he is his Sharingan–but Fuyu Namikaze stays standing for a few more moments, not even puasing, shards of what looks like ice forming around her hand, before she sways once, twice, and falls to the ground.

“Get him out of there!” Ibiki says to the two T&I flunkies guarding the door who immediately jump to obey; then he turns to her and raises an eyebrow.

Anko shrugs, she doesn’t know what he wants her to say. “Yeah, that was fucking bizarre.”

Which isn’t exactly out of line for Fuyu Namikaze.

~

A/N: A longer fill than yesterday, because there were so many ideas I wanted to convey for this prompt, to-someplace-else, and I didn’t even get to the rest of Team Seven so… um… but at least I got the Kakashi and outside!POV parts?

Also, apparently I’m going FULL CANON DIVERGENCE here–Orochimaru’s dead, Naruto became a chuunin, who knows what else I’ll change? So there’s that…

Okay you asked for prompts so you’re getting prompts: Tobirama Is Actually A Cat, part 3, reuniting with his team.

A/N: … so… I actually forgot about this ‘verse? Aaand… I also don’t remember what I had planned, either…

Which I guess just makes this a free for all for me?

Yeah, okay, let’s do this.

~

Curiosity Kills (Satisfaction Guaranteed), 3/? (2017-12-07)

(four)

Tobirama is used to having eyes on him. His appearance, when he was younger, until he could rightly earn those looks because of his abilities. The Senju’s second strongest son.

And then, after Hashirama’s death, the strongest. The Hokage.

Yes, Tobirama is used to having people’s attention–negative more than positive–and while he might never handle it as well as Hashirama did, at least he could walk tall with his head held high.

Or, at least, he used to.

Now he slinks under everyone’s gaze, ashamed at being seen so. At the fuss everyone is making over him, over mistaken sorrow–an embarrassing tale for his students to hold over him later.

“Kitty!” a high voice calls out, before Tobirama is roughly grabbed, his legs pinned to his body, awkward, bordering on painful.

Still, he does not unsheathe his claws.

“Tsunade-chan, sweetheart, put him down,” Mito says–her voice he would recognize anywhere, thick with grief as it may be. Not as if it’s the first time, anyway.

Thankfully, Tobirama is let go–somewhat reluctantly dropped–and so he indulges his brother’s granddaughter the lingering pets.

To his surprise, Mito drops to her knees–ceremony and age be damned–and runs her own hand over his head. “Oh, Tobirama,” his best friend sighs, a familiar refrain.

For a moment, he thinks everything will be okay.

Then she starts to cry.

(There is no changing back.

As far as everyone knows, he is dead.

That may as well be true.)

He is free to come and go, the guards letting him through with fond if subdued smiles–never mind that he doesn’t need permission, chakra still keyed to the gates– but he doesn’t go far.

Tobirama walks the streets of Konoha, patrolling, protective, even if he can no longer be Hokage. This is still his brother’s village. His  village, too, and even in this cursed existence he will defend her to the death.

How lucky that it appears he can do so multiple times.

Outside the Senju compound, quiet and constant, everything is in flux.

They are at war still, of course, but more than that there is internal controversy. The people have lost their leader: while field promotions may hold for the ranks of soldiers, the council is reluctant to hand leadership over to a teenager.

On top of that, there is dissension in his team–damned politics muddling his straightforward decision with talks of candidacies and clan support.

Inside the Senju compound he is a reminder of a respected relative lost.

Outside, he is a critical pawn in his own succession.

~

A/N: … didn’t get to Team Tobirama just yet, sorry, but this seemed like a good place to end part 3 even if I did cop out the whole “he can’t change back” thing.

I mean, that is the premise anyway, so going through the story of how he tries and fails would just be redundant.

I loved your AYWtM drabbles! I decided to go through your AYWtM tag again, and in your first brainstorm you mentioned thinking of a HP/Narnia crossover with Harry, Hermione, Ron and Neville as the kings and queen of Narnia. Do you have anything more on that?

Hey to-someplace-else! I did actually do a little bit more on that a few days later, though I failed to link it from the original post, but considering it’s been almost two years since I posted those I could definitely touch back on the idea.

I think maybe the main problem–besides not having a firm enough idea of when in the HP timeline to do it–is that a few months later the Descendants x Narnia crossover idea struck me and overall that one feels more cohesive.

Don’t get me wrong, I will always be very pleased with the “just Harry” and “Harry the Just” connection, but as an adventure or, maybe, as a set of character developments, it works better with Descendants. Or, perhaps, the four Lost Kids of Descendants “need” the character developments from a Narnia crossover than the four HP kids do.

Like, the HP series is far from perfect, but the personal growth that the Golden Trio and Neville (which is it’s own sticking point, Neville being the odd man out, that the Descendants version doesn’t have) have over the course of it is one of things that I wouldn’t want alter too much. A Golden Trio+Neville (the Golden Quartet?) come back from ruling Narnia in their first or second year would be vastly different from canon and have almost too many butterfly effects that would render the HP series unrecognizable.

Unless for some reason they decided to keep it secret, but then the story would be about those small moments in which the Golden Quartet do decide to utilize what they learned and it doesn’t make much sense for them to do that? Like, given their Gryffindor natures, the only one who would be vaguely subtle about it might be Hermione, but even then she canonically held Rita Skeeter captive in a jar as a fourteen year old–no way would a grown queen version of her used to warfare not want to immediately hunt down and destroy Voldemort and his Death Eaters immediately.

… although now that I say this… what if it’s NOT the Golden Quartet who went? That is, what if it’s not a bunch of brash Gryffindors who would immediately enact justice upon returning, no matter their situation upon returning?

What if it’s a bunch of Slytherins? And Narnia-prophecy wise it would work better: Draco, Blaise, Pansy, and Millicent or Daphne. There wouldn’t really be an odd man out like with the Golden Trio + Neville because except for Pansy’s sycophancy towards Draco (which may very well be a reputation thing) they’re all fairly individualistic. And upon coming back it would make sense that they keep quiet about it because while Voldemort might be evil, the Death Eaters are their parents. The Slytherins would be highly aware of the “real world” and societal limitations on them that a Golden Quartet wouldn’t.

But then that edges a bit into what I like about Once Then Always in that four kids of villains can become heroes. And whereas in the HP series it would just butterfly effect in different ways, in Descendants it would add an additional layer.

Although I suppose something similar could be done if the Hogwarts Founders were the Digory and Polly equivalents? But even then there’s not much need for a crossover with The Chronicles of Narnia–the HP ‘verse has more than enough material to do something similar…

Sorry that’s pretty much all I’ve got for this particular thread, to-someplace-else.

Re dating in FttLP: ALSO consider the hilarity of Tsume teasing Shikako about Kiba making a good boyfriend and Shikamaru hearing. (Though I do think that as they age they would be able to shield their thoughts when they want to be separate, otherwise it would be functionally no different to a hive mind situation. Also, not all missions would need a twin at home for updated orders, so if nothing was going on, twins could still get assigned the same missions, surely).

Yeah, they can’t be hive mind otherwise that’d be no fun. I quite like the idea that even though the twins both “hear” the same thing, they react differently. So Tsume telling Shikako that Kiba would make a good boyfriend would cause confusion in ever-oblivious Shikako, whereas Shikamaru would hold a heretofore unseen grudge against Kiba for a while.

I suppose for the short term “find the ferret” mission, both twins being sent would make sense–they can cover a larger area faster and with instantaneous communication–and would be a good first command mission for new chuunin!Shikamaru and Naruto (although, given the bond, would that have pushed Shikako’s almost promotion due to strategizing into an actual promotion?) So that covers the Gelel arc.

But I don’t see why they would both be assigned to the longer-term semi-diplomatic mission to Land of Moon… Or, rather, that they would both be assigned, but only one of them would physically go while the other stays behind to act as Intel handler.

I just found your pokemon au and it’s so cool! can’t believe I didn’t see it earlier! for eeveelutions, (bc everyone’s gotta have one, y’know? lol) I was thinking of a leafeon for kako because gelel = nature? maybe the gelel stone acts sorta like the leaf stone that leafeons need to evolve and so she gets a leafeon after the gelel incident!

😀 Thanks!

The Eeveelutions also have a place in my heart (there was once I time I was considering doing a series of embroideries for them before… well… embroidery is very time intensive and I’m still not yet done with my second project) and IRL I would probably be a crazy cat lady but with Eeveelutions if it were possible, but alas…

Seeing as how there isn’t a Rock-type Eeveelution (yet…) I agree that Leafeon would be the most suited for Shikako or maybe just the Nara clan in general? What with the colour scheme and the medical expertise and forests and such. Frankly the only person who is better suited to Leafeon would probably be Tenzo/Yamato…

But while I agree that Leafeon is the best suited Eeveelution for Shikako, I don’t think Shikako would have an Eeveelution in my particular PokemonxDoS ‘verse.  I’m fairly satisfied with my choices for her team.

Although, now that I consider it some more, you want to know what would be hella cute? Shikaku having a Leafeon. Like. This battle experienced yet still adorable leaf fox/cat thing just following the twins around while they’re children. It’s there when they first learn to walk (“little cat foot” anyone?), lazes about in the sun beside them while they nap, an ever present guardian until they’re strong and old enough to be on their own (or, at least, until they have Pokemon of their own).

Ino-Shika-Cho Dad Edition all having Eeveelutions would be the CUTEST thing, I think: Leafeon for Shikaku, Espeon for Inoichi, and I’m thinking either classic Eevee or Sylveon for Chouza. I mean, I don’t know who their jounin sensei was, but I feel like whoever they were gave each of them and Eevee after their graduation so their respective Eeveelutions have been with them for a long time.

AAAAAAAAH! I AM SO FOOLISH!

UMBREON

-_- what was I thinking?!

I mean… unless everyone THINKS Shikaku is going to turn his Eevee into an Umbreon, but surprises everyone by going with Leafeon instead

After all, he’s not very big on doing what’s expected of him…

I like Shikaku’s surprise!Leafeon 🙂

Leafeon v Umbreon is the only dilemma that matters O_O

Yeah, the more I think about Chouza with Sylveon the more I like it. Because it goes with the same ethereal and beautiful butterflies but also HEAVY HITTING DRAGON SLAYERS. 😀
