Gravity Falls is an amazing show, definitely, but I kind of wonder if maybe it’s too amazing–is such a thing makes sense. Like it’s very comprehensively satisfying–there’s not many loose ends or critical points that I want to change. Kind of like Leverage (which I adore) it’s a perfectly compact blend of world-building and characters that I’m not sure what, if anything, I could do with it. As much as I love Leverage I hardly ever read any fic for it because the show is so much more satisfying.
At most, maaaybe future fic, but even then it’s kind of… or maybe past fic about either one of the Grunkles’ adventures? Hm…
Having considered it, I suppose my question to you would be if you’d want GF universe fic or GF character fic which are very different things indeed.
I mean, canonically, Ford DID travel through endless dimensions–though the “main world” is itself already absolutely fascinating and with a multitude of (im)possibilities, and surely Gravity Falls can’t be the ONLY hot spot of bizarre supernatural activity.
Then again, a huge part of what makes the show so great is the characters and the idea of this family–both blood and found–of misfits loving and supporting each other while also still having conflicts is something that can easily crossover to any AU.

Hm, see the thing is, there’s a difference between me wanting to see an idea be continued/written (by someone else) versus me wanting to continue/write an idea versus wanting to develop the idea some more via asks…
So I went through the giant list of the ask box fake fic titles event posts (under the cut) and split them into the three different categories and this is going to be a long rambling post, anon. But I’m really happy you asked it because I did kind of want to do an overview of the event because that was A LOT of stories and ‘verses that got generated over the past six weeks.
Also, I kind of want to see reader feedback about what stories and ‘verses everyone liked best. Anyway, here’s “writer’s choice” for now:
For Miracle and the dark side of the moon it’s more that I would like to see the directions that JJ1293 and the others go with for the pre!Kako ‘verse and where the other writers (including @donapoetrypassion) who already have ROOT!Shikako fics go with theirs. I like the ideas, but I more like what others can do with them.
Colorblind I’m pretty sure has to exist somewhere–the HP fandom is too big and too prolific for it not to–but if it doesn’t (because it is, admittedly, the “B-sides” of what would be the main story revolving around Slytherin!Harry) it’s still an idea I think someone else can do a lot better than I can.
close your eyes (breathe in your ruin) is almost entirely Kakashi’s POV which I’ve previously disclosed as being THE MOST DIFFICULT for me so… would love to read it, but cannot, for the life of me, write it.
** Monster Smiles (blood in my teeth) and All You Have To Do (Is Stay) are both in “would like to see someone else continue” and “would like to continue myself” because I think, in a perfect world, these would be pretty fantastic collaborative fics. Well, MS(bimt) would just be a collection of different authors focussing on different characters and less actual collaboration. But AYHTD(IS) would be active collaboration. And maybe different realities are different authors, but getting those to mesh together would require active collaboration.

Desperate Endeavors I’m a little bit worried will be too similar to Lies Beyond The Morning and also has Kakashi. But I think so long as I don’t go into Kakashi POV overly much and frame it less as a mind trip and more of a run/escape mind heist it should be okay?
In The Absence of Heroes I know is probably one of the less popular posts from this event, but I’m inordinately fond of it? Probably because I love the Lost Kids way more than I like the Descendants movie, and the idea of putting them in a setting where they can grow into themselves properly is just so appealing to me. Also, the idea of Old Ben Kenobi having this herd of moody teenagers and NOT HAVING THEM FALL VICTIM TO CREEPY ASS PALPATINE is just so nice. A little bit redemption for everyone?
Freedom’s Just Another Word, I swear to god, is my favorite post and I can’t believed I messed up the posting for it so that it didn’t come out when people were expecting. Please, go check it out if you haven’t seen it. I can only dream of being witty and imaginative enough to make the FJAW that I see in my mind’s eye… ah, dang, does this title have JAW in it?! That’s hilarious. Though I’m worried that because Mist is so unknown that it’s too open a sandbox for me to play with. I work better with distinct frames, I think.
Call On Your Angels I just really like Atlantis The Lost Empire and “assemble the crew” movies.
Tamed, Strong In The Real Way, Trapped In The Lightbulb Fixation, and Remember To Sleep are very expansive AU fusions so most of those respective posts have been more about world building than a plot outline. I’ve already gotten a lot of asks which has helped me figure out both the world and the plots a little, but I don’t think I know enough yet to say whether or not I’d want to continue these four stories.
Anyway, if you’ve gotten this far–I’m impressed! How did everyone else like this event? Which stories and ‘verses were your favorite? Would anyone be interested in doing this event again in the future?

Ah, sorry to say I don’t know much if anything about Homestuck. I liked the idea, but I just was never really able to immerse myself into it. Sorry.
But character-as-a-Gamer has always been pretty interesting to me (SQ actually did one with Iruka which is a fantastic read, as per usual for SQ) and there’s also one of my old time faves A Lifetime of Chances which has Team Seven stuck in a time loop and in Chapter 6 it briefly brushed upon the idea that the more loops they go through, the more powerful they get, and eventually they’d become even stronger than the Shinigami.
That’s all I can really think of that would be even vaguely related to your ask? I mean, you’ve checked out my DoS crossover post so you’ve probably also seen the FFVII idea with Kaguya and Shikako as Ancient 2.0 and 3.0 and possibly even read Stories of Ancient Gods. Um… yeah.
It sounds like a cool idea, I don’t know enough about Homestuck, but it definitely sounds like a DoSxHomestuck crossover would be a fascinating read if it’s about Shikako accidentally achieving god status and having to deal with all the bizarre abilities/responsibilities/shenanigans that come with it.
I made a spreadsheet for the DSS Requirement crew! WIZARDS IN SPAAAAAAAAACE!
So basically… if you haven’t read @esamastation‘s D.S.S Requirement ‘verse then this won’t make any sense, but if you did then, well, this still might not make much sense. Hence why I am explaining it. You can’t really see the text so well in the pictures provided–which is why I suggest downloading it for yourself–but the pictures are here so you can see what I’m referring to.
Because I am a huge, spreadsheet loving nerd, I decided to make a spreadsheet of esama’s fic listing basically all of the members of the D.A. (book canon as well as guesses at the few movie-only members) and figuring out which of the teams they would be in. (I’ve also written some remix/spin-off fics, here).
The six teams I created are: 1) Command – further split into Administration, Strategy, Business –, 2) Engineering, 3) Information, 4) Navigation, 5) Operations, and 6) Medical.
Except for the Ministry Six, the Weasley Twins, and Lee Jordan (the latter three who were the ones to discover the spaceship in the first place) I went through the fic and took note of when characters were mentioned and in which chapters. For some it helped, for others… not so much. In which case I went to their wiki pages and tried to figure out what they’d specialize in.
I noticed–like with Zacharias Smith in particular–that some characters would be on multiple teams. Which is not so bad, because that means they’d be able to function as multiple roles, but I realized as a method of organization and hierarchy that’d be a bit unwieldy. So everyone has a “primary” team and secondary teams as their abilities/time allows.
Then came symbols. Because if everyone’s armor is colored to their House (Red and Gold for Gryffindor, Blue and Bronze for Ravenclaw, Yellow and Black for Hufflepuff) then there has to be some other way to quickly identify people and what team they’re on. Especially since the armor comes with helmets that cover the face and the armor sizes are a matter of personal preference.
The symbols correspond as such: 1) Command = line/bar, 2) Engineering = triangle, 3) Information = circle, 4) Navigation = diamond, 5) Operations = Shield, 6) Medical = cross.
Heads/co-heads/deputies of teams also get a bars even if they’re not “Command team” necessarily. As captain, Harry gets three bars; as co-executive officers, Hermione and Ron get two bars; all team heads get a full single bar, all deputies get a thinner “half bar”, and people on the Command team who aren’t officers of other teams get an “empty bar”.
I just went through the designations I figured out in the spreadsheet and created unique symbols for everyone–that’s right: except for the Weasley twins everyone has a unique symbol. So from a quick glance the largest shape/outline is the “primary” team that person is on, and the smaller symbols inside are their secondary teams as well as whether or not they are officers. Probably, everyone gets to recognize people as much by their symbols as their faces, eventually. Though, as a good captain, Harry probably learns it first 😛
It was distractingly fun to create all of these.
Here are some random headcanons that I had to develop in order to make sense of the movie-only members of the DA.
Basically, JK Rowling was very unclear as to exactly how many Hufflepuff girls in Harry’s year there were. Except for Hannah Abbot and Susan Bones, there might have been two or three others. In the books there was a briefly mentioned Megan Jones who was definitely a Hufflepuff. There was also a Sally-Anne Perks and a Sally or Georgina (apparently her first name was undecided somehow) Smith who might have been either a Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, or Slytherin. In the movie there is a Hufflepuff character in Harry’s year who is friends with Katie Bell but is only named Leanne. I didn’t want to add more Gryffindors unless it was absolutely necessary and it’s established that there are no Slytherins in DA, so I made both Sallys Hufflepuffs. And I figured, so as to avoid confusion, they would go by nicknames or their middle names hence Sally-Anne “Leanne” Perks and Sally “Georgina” Smith.
According to the wiki of Dumbledore’s Army, the movie version included these names explicitly: Nigel Wolpert, Rionach O’Neal, Luca Michali Caruso and Alice Tolipan. Nigel and Rionach are both Gryffindors according to the movie (tie colors) but Luca and Alice could be anything and I decided to make them Ravenclaws because… balance.
Now who is Peter Jones and why did I include him? Well… the actress suspected to be Megan Jones in the movies has been spotted wearing a yellow tie in one scene and a red tie in a different scene. Rather than just saying–hey, continuity errors–I wanted to have it add to the unwritten story. Peter Jones is a confirmed Gryffindor–Megan and Peter are possibly related due to their last name–and he has has been noted as being somewhat forgetful (he lost his cauldron) so it’s possible that he and his sister or cousin just misplace their ties and don’t want to get docked points for being out of uniform so they just wear whatever tie is on hand.
I also headcanon that Zacharias Smith and Sally “Georgina” Smith are both related and descendants of Helga Hufflepuff because why not?
