It is always fun to talk meta about fanfiction world-building/characterizations, so I definitely appreciate the opportunity to do so. Thanks, lionhead! đ

I came across a dos reading you did and I just wanted to say you have the softest, most soothing voice I’ve ever heard?? I’m not even registering the words I’m literally just listening to the soft.
đ Thank you? I get that a lotâpart of the reason why I even thought I could do the DoS podfic given the main character is a literal thirteen year old girl (or younger!) for most of the story.
If you wanted the full playlist (HOURS OF THE SOFT) all chapters up to date are available here.
Jiraiya and Naruto, #47, any AU
Remember to Sleep, 47) things you said in a hotel room
Jiraiyaâs at the hotel barâand, yeah, maybe itâs a little early in the day for a drink or three, but whoâs checking?âwhen he sees it: the briefest glimpse of all too familiar blonde hair.
He shakes his head, mutters to himself, âDonât get your hopes up,â and goes back to his drink. Itâs impossible, what heâs thinking, and besides, thereâs a pair of beautiful young ladies who look like they might appreciate some excellent company.
He signals for the bartender to send over some complimentary drinks (mimosas, apparently, not like the princess who would appreciate harder liquor) and gets ready to put on some moves.
Fifteen minutes and a double dousing of socially acceptable daytime drinks in his face later, he spots it again: bright and messy, even through the champagne and orange juice in his eyes. This is a sign, no doubt, destiny telling him to followâwhy else would those lovely ladies reject his advances?
The bartender, unimpressed but dutiful, passes Jiraiya a towel to wipe his face. Taking the opportunity, he asks, âWhatâs going on in the ballroom?â
The bartender shrugs, âSome kind of science convention. Not too sure. Iâm hoping itâs medicalâdoctors really know how to drink.â
Jiraiya rolls his eyes, âYouâre telling me.â But thatâs a sob story for a different bartender, maybe, and heâs got an entirely different blonde to chase down.
According to the signs, it is indeed âsome kind of science conventionâ. More specifically, one for cybernetic augmentations and enhancements. It is, unfortunately, hauntingly familiar stomping grounds for him.
Most of the names listed for panels are old or uninterestingâone of the main reasons heâs stopped coming to these things, even if they do offer all expenses paid. How this is supposed to be about innovations when itâs the same people rehashing the same tech is beyond himâexcept one of the smaller rooms, practically in fine print at the bottom of the itinerary, has a name heâs never seen before.
Not new to him entirely (Nara is common enough, almost a household name given the reach of their pharmaceuticals and the fact that practically everyone is medicated these days) but definitely new to this particular arena. Cautious branching out, maybe? That would explain why they have a small room instead of space in the main ballroom.
Except when Jiraiya gets to the room listed, itâs packed. Overflowing, practically. If he werenât who he was, and the staff at the door hadnât recognized him, he might not have gotten inâas is, itâs a tight squeeze. Which he wouldnât mind if it were a crowd of buxom beauties, but, alas, he is surrounded by sweaty nerds. But why is such a popular panel in such a tiny room?
Or, maybe, he should be wondering: why is this Nara panel so popular?
Except once he gets to the frontââitâs such an honor that youâre here, sir, and also a surprise. We werenât told youâd be here, but of course youâre more than welcome. Such an honor, please, thereâs VIP seating,ââeven that question flees from his mind.
Because sitting just next to that (surprisingly young and pretty, nothing like that stony-faced punk Shikaku) newcomer Nara is MinatoâŚ
⌠but not.
Thatâs definitely Minatoâs god-awful hair, and damned too blue eyes, but itâs in a face more like Kushinaâs. Thatâs definitely her smile on that bratâs face, aimed with laser accuracy at the Nara girl beside him.
âWhat the hell is going on?â
You know, I was sure, despite being the one to submit the prompt, and knowing it would include Naruto and Jiraiya, that the blonde hair Jiraiya had seen was Tsunadeâs.
The fact that it was a scientific/medical conference only made that impression stronger, and I was hooked. I was like, âWhereâs Naruto coming in? Is this a âget Tsunade to become Hokageâ equivalent?â Edge of my seat.
Which made the reveal of the Nara room a surprise, even though it really shouldnât have been, given the information I had available to me, lol
And now Iâm wondering why was the panel so popular? I donât remember any relevant details from the original line of fics ⌠better re-read, lol! ^_^
I headcanon that Jiraiya is almost always thinking about Tsunade in one way or another đ
Thereâs nothing really specific in previous installments that would explain why the panel is so popular, but timeline-wise I made this so that itâs after the incident which resulted in Shikamaru getting a cybernetic arm. Like, Shikakoâs already had her debut in the industry, and then she got a little popular, and then she was attacked but Shikamaru got in the way such that heâs the one who got hurt instead. Then Shikako went full hermit for a while–from the community and from her family–and probably would continued doing so if it werenât for meeting Naruto. But sheâs still paranoid, so she requested one of the smaller rooms and the event coordinators were just like âwhatever gets you to our convention, yes, you can have this stranger sit next to you.â
So Jiraiya is actually witnessing her comeback, but since HEâS also been out of the loop for a while (probably not long after Minato and Kushina died), he thinks sheâs a complete newcomer.
i read that actress shikako fic and i got this incredible time travel/reincarnation vib, except unlike how it’s usually sone, instead of someone close to her, kankuro was the one to come with/rememeber
That would be absolutely hilarious and simultaneously poignant.
I absolutely love Shikako and Kankurouâs friendship because itâs very low stakes but not shallow. They are actually fond of each other for no deeper reason than they just like each otherâs personalitiesâShikako doesnât have to worry about if sheâs influencing him too much (or not enough) and as far as Kankurou knows sheâs weird because thatâs just how she is and not sheâs different from how she was as a child, why are you changing, what secrets are you keeping.
But I went into that here, no use rehashing it.
The idea of actress!Shikako and Kazekage!Kankurou traveling back in time from their bleak future to their less bleak but more dangerous past would sort of test that seemingly shallow friendship. They went through hell together and sort of drifted apart less by choice and more by circumstance. Would they have been united in their grief? Does that no longer apply since the situation that brought said grief about has been unwritten (and could easily be prevented entirely)? Will they actively ignore that bleak future or will it be something they share and acknowledge so as not to make the same mistakes?
I dunno, wildtabbykat, itâs a pretty cool AU of an AU of an AU.
Also, I just wanted to add that I really liked the initial vision of it, with the ninja!PR-equivalent and Shikaku confused and impressed at the buck who gets his antlers stuck in trees (which is an amusing image for Shikako to be filling, too ^_^ )
Do you know the Girl Genius comics? That mention of Shikako humming as she worked made me want to prompt you for them–although asking for a “whole new” recursive AU for this event might be a bit much, lol :/ :)
I vaguely know of it but Iâve never actually read it, sorry lionheadbookends. Actually, Iâm only aware of it because Iâm a fan of Gunnerkrigg Court (as are you! given your avatar) and there was a card game they did together? But it was a while agoâŚ
Iâd be more prepared to do that as a new recursive AU though perhaps not in the same way. Like⌠instead of Shikako as the humming girl genius, itâd probably expand out to Konoha peeps are those from The Forest (or, at least, Shikako is Shadow) and other characters are from The Court⌠I dunno, Iâd have to ponder it some moreâŚ
It is absolutely hilarious that Shikako didn’t realize Sasuke moved in–that’s the best thing I’ve ever heard! ^_^ :D I’ll admit, I’m not sure why Naruto was resting moving in somewhere? What was going on there?
Thanks! đ Shikakoâs hyperawareness of danger versus her obliviousness to the most benign things is one of my favorite things of DoS.
I think it was more like, people kept trying to offer places to Naruto for freeâand in the humble way of heroes, he didnât want to accept itâand this kept happening because, hey, hero of the world or something like that, that he didnât have time to find a place for himselfâŚ
Or, I just wanted a reason for all of them to end up in the warehouseâŚÂ đ
Flip to the Last Page, Nara Twins, 32) Things you said I wouldnât understand
Flip to the Last Page, 32) things you said I wouldnât understand
âI just need some time,â your sister says, eyes looking everywhere but at you. Sheâs packing, grabbing things at random, placing then removing then folding then replacing, anything to keep her hands busy.
âI just need to be aloâI just need some space,â she stammers, and you canât hear anything in your head to refute that mostly because sheâs slammed a wall on your connection, metal bars and concrete.
As the two of you grew, so did your control over your connection. No more the constant, unconscious flow of childhoodâthoughts more often impressions than wordsânow you can utilize it strategically: plans and intel, Jounin Commander in the making. Or, rather, you would if your sister werenât blocking you out.
âI just need to think,â she says, and this third time hits the worst because you know if she were letting her thoughts seep through, youâd hear the added âby myself.â
Futilely, you try to send your arguments through her barrier: why canât you think here? Youâre already cutting me off, obviously youâve made space for yourself. Why wonât you stay?
If she hears anything, she doesnât respond beyond the flattening of her mouth into a tight, tense line.
The two of you are supposed to be a team, siblings, friends, partners. She makes it seem as if your twin bond is nothing more than a prison. One with a life sentence at that.
That makes her soften, her furrowed brow transitioning from frustrated to contrite, but no less determined.
âI just⌠need to know that Iâm not making things worse.â

A/N: VERY BELATED, VERY SHORT, VERY SORRY DONA! Apparently thereâs a little bit more needed from me for Geek Show and also May is a hectic month for me in general. Also, FttLP is a massive mystery to me still despite it being something I wroteâŚ
I feel sorry for this Shikamaru. Heâs grown up around Shikako like a vine around a trellis.
Iâm still trying to work how how different he is from DOS Shikamaru- he must be, at least in the âdoes not instinctually trust the villageâ sense.
âŚI donât know if he even looks at his dad as a guide as much as he does his sister. He admires him, yes. But he wouldnât instinctively go to him for things the way DOS Shikamaru would. And when he thinks about being Jounin Commander, itâs as a set. Even when he disagrees with Shikako, heâs responding to her. Heâs not deciding things on his own.
Iâm not sure heâd deal with losing her as well as Hiashi did. (To the extent that Hiashi was able to deal with it âwell.â)
âŚIâm a little curious that Shikako might seek Hiashi out on this. Sheâs not gonna be able to go to anyone when she worries her existence will disrupt the future. But worries that sheâs stunting her brothers growth as a person (and that Shika may be letting her)⌠maybe she can share that. I definitely got the feeling she was talking about both things when she said âmaking things worse.â
FttLP!Shikamaru is very different from DoS!Shikamaru (who is very different from canon!Shikamaru, of course). I wouldnât say FttLP!Shika is more dependent than DoS!Shikaâsince I interpret a lot of DoS!Shikaâs current frustration to be that he can no longer consider himself âKakoâs protectorââbut thereâs definitely a weird dynamic going on. Like, FttLP!Shika knew from the beginning that Shikako is a reincarnated adult and that she has knowledge that no one else does. While FttLP!Shikako had the same issues with chakra and some social anxiety like DoS!Shikako, which would prompt a similar protectiveness in FttLP!Shikamaru, there was still a sort of⌠he looked to her as the font of knowledge/experience whereas, as you said, DoS!Shikamaru would definitely go to their dad for instead.
The Nara twins would not be nearly as good at dealing with the otherâs loss as Hiashi arguably was. Mostly because Nara are⌠not âdesigned,â per se, but trained? encouraged? to rely on strategic/critical thinking whereas the Hyuuga are more about full sight and reflexes⌠I probably ought to write more about the comparison/contrast of the different sets of twinsâŚ
That’s great (ToT)d
đ Thanks! I tried to do some foreshadowing from âunder the stars and in the grassâ to âwith clenched fistsâ (âďžăŽďž)â Hopefully it worked?
Holy Shit! That They Call it Soulless #8 hits HARD! Wow! :O
Thanks! Hopefully I can maintain that level for the rest of the event đ
