Don’t Hold Back, (tiny) part 2 (2016-03-10)

Given Shikako has literally received a promotion due to her sensing ability, and seeing as how Shikamaru, Naruto, and Sasuke have the three chakra signatures most familiar to her, it would be ridiculously stupid for them to try to use stealth and follow her. Which is why they outsource it.

Or… try to. Team Ebisu and Team Hana are not making it easy.

“Okay, Boss,” Konohamaru says, entirely cooperative, “but you know we’re not gonna do this for free.”

Naruto looks at him, stunned.

“We’re officially shinobi of Konoha,” Moegi explains, only a little smugly, “And what you’re describing sounds an awful lot like a mission.”

“What?” Naruto bursts out, “You cheapskates!”

“It’s probably a D-rank, maybe a C-rank at most,” Hanabi says with a pointed glance at Sasuke, “It’s not like you can’t afford it.”

Admittedly, Sasuke is disgustingly rich even without all of the pay he’s received from near constant patrols interspersed with A-ranks and S-ranks. So it’s true that alone he could pay for two C-ranks easily.

Doesn’t mean he wants to give them the satisfaction.

“Extortionists. You’re already going to train with her today,” Sasuke grumbles.

“We just know what we’re worth,” Ranmaru says, pleased.

“Just pay them,” Shikamaru mutters, jabbing his elbow into Sasuke’s ribs, “Unless you don’t want to know you Shikako’s dating.” As if Shikamaru himself weren’t the most invested in finding out who his sister is involved with.

“Fine, but Naruto’s paying the other team,” because there are only two teenagers with more A-ranks and S-ranks than Sasuke, and both of them are his teammates.

“That’s okay,” Naruto agrees affably, “I had some down time during a mission in Tanzaku Gai two weeks ago.”

Unfortunately, Naruto’s good luck does not extend to the two genin teams. Or maybe it does, because their self-styled mission–and their pay–extends beyond one day.

It takes a month.

And mostly? They figure it out via a giant process of elimination.

~

A/N: So… I really did want to keep going but then I realized… I had no idea how yet? And I didn’t want this to just languish on my laptop for however long it took so… here’s this tiny installment. Hope ya’ll enjoy–especially you, @openace who reminded me about this particular DoS remix series.

Anyway, given how Konoha is super fond of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” when it comes to team configurations and the whole “Shikako’s stray thoughts are actually hella important foreshadowing” I figured that while the Konohamaru corps became Team Ebisu as in canon, the other kids would be the Team Eight remake–that is, this time it’s Aburame-Hyuuga-genjutsu specialist genin with an Inuzuka sensei. And I like to think that Hana gets promoted during the time skip and, in the same way Kurenai became a sensei, she does too. Also, I just really like the idea of each of the Haimaru brothers having a specific genin they watch over.

I suppose where it’s implied that Kurenai’s Team Eight is a tracking team eventually specializing in hunting down missing nin/enemies, Team Hana would be more a tracking team eventually specializing in search and rescue kind missions.

what are your dos ships? (I’ve been lookin for a Neji/Shikako ship since forever)

… am I allowed to answer this? I kind of have this notion like, because I run the dosbysilverqueen blog, I’m contractually obligated to stay neutral. I mean, that’s a silly feeling, so I’m going to ignore it, but that’s my first gut instinct.

Let’s see, for DoS ships… I have to admit that I greatly enjoy how DoS is gen–more about friendship and family than romance–because I’ve always been the type of fan who prefers what the fandom comes up with for ships than what the original does? Or rather, that the original work picking a specific ship almost ruins the magic of it–it makes it real in a very specific way and it can’t be undone. Or un-canon-ed… if that makes any sense.

From a fan’s point of view I am, obviously, quite fond of GaaraxShikako (unsurprisingly, given that my Dreaming of S(omething) series revolves around the first Dreaming of S(erenity) that was inspired by their Grass Chuunin Exam battle), and I do think it is my most favorite? In the sense that, if something had to become “canon DoS” then I would mind that the least–because there have been multiple moments of creating a foundation for a romantic relationship. Not immediately of course, but if–for some odd reason–SQ did a sudden time skip straight to the epilogue and showed ShikakoxGaara then I wouldn’t be all that surprised or disappointed?

Same with KibaxShikako, though I find that less feasible only because I feel that Shikako views a lot of the Konoha-nin (especially the Konoha Twelve/Thirteen) as, well, assets? Or… characters. Well, no, but I’m unsure about how to say this… like, Shikako can’t view any of them in a romantic sense because she knows too much about them from her own reader’s POV that there might be… not necessarily a consent gap but like a… knowledge disadvantage.

And there’s also the Westermarck effect which, technically, only applies to children raised together from birth to six years old and so doesn’t actually apply to Shikako and the rest of the Rookie Nine. But I feel like it’s something that would linger with Shikako–they are characters, they are children, they are assets that need to be kept alive–and so she wouldn’t be able to view any of them romantically (at least, not for a long while).

Which is probably why I’m fond of a conflicted/unrequited!SasukexShikako; because not only is she basically the first girl to befriend him as himself (and not the school idol) but she’s also the closest thing he has to family? So, like I’ve mentioned before, there is no doubt that Sasuke loves Shikako but I don’t think even he quite knows in what way–romantic or platonic. And Shikako for sure loves him platonically, but I feel like the consent/knowledge disadvanatge applies to him especially–seeing as how Shikako has literally changed his fate on multiple occasions. She has way too much power over him–and way too many secrets she’s hiding from him–for her to ever feel like she can be in a romantic with him.

And with InoxShikako. Well, that ship is complicated not because Ino’s feelings are complicated for Shikako–I kind of feel like Ino would be okay with either a romantic relationship with Shikako or maintaining their platonic friendship, unlike Sasuke who is unsure what he wants–but because Shikako has also changed Ino’s fate for the worse (at least, given her latest feelings about damaging Team Ten…). So not only is there a power disparity and secret-keeping there’s also guilt on Shikako’s part–which there isn’t really with Sasuke.

That being said, I am now wondering about the SakuraxShikako ship. But like, way after everything in canon has been settled; like when everyone’s nineteen or so. Because Shikako has definitely changed Sakura’s life–majorly, considering she’s not on Team Seven anymore–but not necessarily for better or worse and not even on purpose. So Shikako would be free from any guilt or secrecy because any differences with Sakura–she’d have such different formative experience than the one canon Sakura had–aren’t really Shikako’s fault. It would remove a little of that consent/knowledge disadvantage because while Shikako knows what canon Sakura would be like it’s not some kind of benchmark that she keeps in her head about how she’s failed/succeeded (not like with Sasuke and Ino, probably). It’s just… different. Yeah, I think that’d be interesting.

As for the members of Team Gai. Well. If I had to ship one of them with Shikako I probably would have originally gone with TenTenxShikako given the steps between acquaintances to friends to lovers isn’t so off. But then thinking about it further (and also keeping in mind that Shikamaru and TenTen are dating, and it’d be really weird to date one twin then the other) that’s kind of… boring? Like… where’s the spark? The passion? And also I’d be a little worried about TenTen’s self-esteem? Like it’s one thing to be friends with a kunoichi who is from a clan and a prodigy at sealing and already a tokubetsu jounin at age thirteen etc. etc. But it’s another thing to date one? Like… ouch–I’d be torn between jealousy and guilt over being jealous constantly.

Given Lee’s eternal, unwavering love for Sakura and also his very disconcerting first/second impression of Shikako (post-Orochimaru battle in the Forest of Death, right after she totally demolished the Sound Genin even though she was so injured and tired and probably concussed) I don’t really think a romantic ship could form between them? Definitely not for a long time. Because Shikako is very clearly not what Lee is looking for–and because Lee is oddly sexist? Like, he doesn’t have anything against kunoichi being shinobi but his “ideal woman” is essentially a damsel in distress whose affection can be won by defeating Sasuke in battle (that’s straight up canon) or by rescuing her from the Sound Genin. And Lee’s continued crush on Sakura (in canon) is because she’s so overtly feminine, or his idea of femininity–pretty and passive–that it always made me very uncomfortable whenever his crush on her was brought up. Especially when she made it clear that she liked Sasuke and he’d still try to pursue her/impress her by trying to defeat Sasuke. I DUNNO. He grows out of his crush on Sakura (eventually) but I have no idea if he’s grown out of that weird idealized femininity, but either way Shikako wouldn’t want that. Like… at all.

And now for Neji. I’ll be honest, anon, until you brought it up I hadn’t ever really thought about it? But now that I do I’m just like… hm… yeah… yeah? Alright! Because Neji is one of the few of the Konoha Twelve that isn’t really in Shikako’s sphere of influence nor someone whose life she feels obligated to improve. Mostly because… she can’t do anything about his life. There’s no way she could have saved his dad, she can’t affect Hyuuga Clan politics, and Naruto has already changed his view on life/Hinata. So… it’s, much like the GaaraxShikako ship and the SakuraxShikako ship, something different and… freeing?

Now as for the specifics of the NejixShikako ship–I do enjoy how Neji’s first/second impression of Shikako is basically the same as Lee’s but instead of being discomfited, Neji is… impressed? He respects her ability and her decisions even if he doesn’t necessarily agree, or maybe because they are so different. Two points that I’d want to see addressed in this ship would be the topic of fate and the Caged Bird Seal–because these are both things which are vital to Neji’s character and which Shikako could possibly change. Because her very existence proves that fate can be changed… and given her reputation as Konoha’s newest budding fuinjutsu master. Well, it wouldn’t make any sense for her not to at least be curious about the Caged Bird Seal.

But these two matters would also be very… Okay so, it’s canon that Neji dies. And Shikako has already gotten in trouble with her fuinjutsu. I almost feel like Shikako would be, at least subconsciously, reluctant to be in a relationship with Neji–at least, before the whole Madara/Kaguya madness. Because then he’d be one more person she’s responsible for. And she’d put so much pressure on herself to prevent his death which would just… it’s a lot for her to juggle and it would absolutely wreck her if she failed. Of course, if this relationship starts after the whole Madara/Kaguya madness then that’s a different story. And, because she’s already been through the end of the world, she’d be more willing to get involved in the politics of the Caged Bird Seal. What does clan politics matter to her anymore? She can do whatever she want… essentially, timing is very important.

how do you think people in the dos universe would react to Shikako dating? especially those close to her and protective of her (Kakashi, Sasuke, Naruto, Shikamaru, etc).

Well I sort of wrote a thing regarding Naruto, Sasuke, and Shikamaru reacting to Shikako dating (or at least, the idea of her secretly dating someone) in Don’t Hold Back… But I guess since they were mostly blindsided by the secrecy, it’s a different situation entirely…

Hm… Kakashi would be fairly hands off (though quietly menacing in the background) whereas with Naruto and Sasuke it would depend an awful lot on who exactly Shikako is dating. Naruto would get over it quicker, so long as everyone involved is happy, though if it were someone like, say, Kiba he’d probably loudly argumentative–”Really? Dog Breath?”

Sasuke would. Well, I headcanon that Sasuke has very mixed feelings about Shikako. Like obviously, he loves her, but even he’s unsure if that’s platonic or romantic love. So at first brush, he’d probably be mildly jealous regardless of who Shikako is dating, and only slowly let it go once he comes to terms with his feelings for her and once Shikako’s significant other proves themselves as “worthy” of dating her. Like, for example, if it were Gaara–”But is he strong enough?” “Sasuke, he is literally the Kazekage.” “So?”

Shikamaru, given his continued overprotectiveness and attempts to manipulate Shikako into being safe, would probably mess with Shikako’s significant other so badly. Just like, constant head games and Shikamaru bribing Academy students to annoy the shit out of them… that sort of thing. Because if they can’t handle small obstacles in their daily life, there’s no way that Shikamaru is going to give his approval. He probably pulls the “future clan head” card at least once as well as the “what are your intentions towards my sister?” Basically, Shikaku and Yoshino don’t really have to do anything because Shikamaru’s got the vetting process down to an art form.

Shikako, of course, is not impressed with any of this. It’s so unfair! No one put TenTen through all this when she started dating Shikamaru!

To which TenTen replies–”Really? You think Ino didn’t put me through a gauntlet?”

Hahaha, I dunno. Something like that, I guess.

Don’t Hold Back, a DoS prompt response drabble (2015-11-27)

They were practically legends, despite their age. The Lucky Sevens’ infamy turning into something more like mythos, like the Sannin in their youth except, somehow, more. More faith, more impossibilities, more potential: the three Sages of Konoha–Uzumaki, Uchiha, and Nara; Toad, Hawk, and Deer.

Of course, to each other, they’re still just the same dorky kids who turned training into games and despite all efforts still had no idea what was under their sensei’s mask.

Which meant that, when Shikako–normally so unflappable–opted out of team Ichiraku that night, then started blushing when they asked why, it was like waving a red flag in front of a bull. Or a face mask in front of a group of curious teenagers.

Of course Naruto and Sasuke were going to snoop around.

Unfortunately for them, Shikako was much better at sneaking around than either of them.

Which meant they would need reinforcements.

Kakashi-sensei, being overly fond of messing with his cute little genin (despite none of them being genin anymore, or little) was all for joining them. But, being the Rokudaime Hokage in charge of the entire village, that meant that he couldn’t.

“But shouldn’t a Hokage be invested in the people of Konoha?” He asked, almost coyly, eyes curved in an unmistakeable smile.

“No,” Iruka-sensei responded implacably, setting yet another stack of scrolls on the desk.

And that was that.

Their next recruitment was a lot more successful. Not enthusiastically so, but that word never really could be applied to Shikamaru, even if it did have to do with his twin sister.

“And you’re sure it’s not anything official?” Shikamaru asked, just to confirm. It wouldn’t be the first time Team Seven dragged him into something which the paperwork ninja spoke of in horrified whispers.

“She said no to ramen! And she was blushing!” Naruto answered, in a rather unhelpful manner.

A quirk of Shikamaru’s eyebrow had Sasuke clarifying, “It was pretty unusual. She wouldn’t say what she was doing instead, just that she had already made plans with someone else.”

“Hm,” Shikamaru pondered, hands curved into his meditative gesture, “We’ll need someone with more intel.”

“Your dad?” Naruto asked, both thrilled and intimidated at asking the elder Nara for help.

“No way,” Shikamaru snorted, “We’ll need Ino.”

Given the fact that Ino is Shikako’s best friend, it stood to reason that she would know exactly what was going on with Shikako.

Then again, given that same fact, it also made sense that Ino wouldn’t share that information without Shikako’s consent. Even to her brother and teammates.

In this case, especially to her brother and teammates.

With a series very unsubtle facial and hand movements, Sasuke was convinced to use his charms on Ino to get her to talk.

She just laughed right in their faces.

“Oh, Sasuke-kun, you will always have a place in my heart,” she said, before patting his cheek the way one would a small child or a beloved pet, “But you really are not cut out for seduction missions.

"Although–just because I know it’ll be hilarious to see what you dumb boys do–I’ll tell you this,” she said, smile bright and devious, “It’s not a matter of what Shikako is doing, but rather a who.”

“What?” Naruto asked, confused.

“What.” Sasuke said, flatly.

“WHO?” Shikamaru practically seethed.

Instead of answering, Ino just laughed again, tossing her blonde hair and relishing in the triumph of knowing something someone else doesn’t.

A/N: A little late, but considering my sleep schedule is all messed up, not too bad? Also, a surprising short turn-around time on this one.

A response to this anonymous prompt. And though it doesn’t completely fill it, I thought this would be fun. Actually, I may continue this later so as to fill the rest of the prompt, but I quite liked this silly mystery set up.

Anyway, I hope you and your friend enjoy, anon!

edit: now titled “Don’t Hold Back” as a little nod towards the Scooby Doo theme song. Having a title does mean I’m more likely to visit a series so… take that as you will…

Fake Fic Summaries 10/?, the triple fusion edition (2015-11-07)

A/N1: I didn’t want to have two missed posts in a row, even if this is just barely sufficient. So here are three sort of fusion/crossover fics from various fandoms that I’ve been pondering but wouldn’t want to or really know where to start.

1) DCU x Assassin’s Creed

While training with Shiva, Tim Drake learns the truth behind a secret centuries-long conflict, the League of Assassins, and his own history. Five years later, the lost heir to Drake Industries and the Robin-that-wasn’t returns to Gotham.

In which Ra’s league is actually the Templars misappropriating the Assassin name and Tim’s legacy comes with a heavy set of responsibilities.

Visited my BFF and she was playing Assassin’s Creed III. Basically, while we were both having intense feelings over Conner and his doomed fate, I wondered a little about a possible fusion. At first, I considered Damian since he’s literally an assassin baby, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that there’s no way that Ra’s was an Assassin fighting for people’s right to freedom. No, he’s more like a Templar–fight for “peace” through order. But then… why is his organization called the League of Assassins?

Likely, the real Assassins are few in number and scattered, losing the war against the Templars. Shiva is one such true assassin and, having discovered Tim’s lineage, decided to teach him about his own heritage. And this was one of the few ways where I can picture Tim being derailed from his duties as Robin.

2) Star vs The Forces of Evil x Elementary

When there are cases that stump other psychiatrists, they refer to Dr. Marco Diaz. For a such a bland seeming man, he has a talent with the more unusual patients.

Then he gets a call from a completely different dimension. He’s about to get a client who redefines the definition of unusual and an adventure for a lifetime.

This one, I admit, I was mostly influenced by me binge-watching Elementary and Star vs The Forces of Evil within the past month. Because the idea of a bewildered but competent adult psychiatrist Marco being drawn into the eccentric and conflicted Star’s evil/crime fighting paralleled Joan and Sherlock’s relationship very easily to me. Also, Tom and his demon horde as Irene/Moriarty? I dunno.

3) Naruto x Avatar the Last Airbender

In which Sai can only express his heritage through art, Sakura rails against her role as a pink-haired novelty, Sasuke is still the last of his red-eyed fire-breathing clan, and Naruto will not let the Air Nomads be forgotten–even if he was a shameful abomination in their opinion.

Also includes Kakashi, the first moon-blessed baby to fire-bend, and Yamato/Tenzo, who can’t bend anything but plants.

Basically, expanded Team Seven in the Avatar universe! Because the elements match up pretty well with Sai being a water-bender, Sakura as earth, Sasuke as fire, and Naruto as air. As for Naruto being a “shameful abomination” I
was trying to figure out what would be a jinchuuriki equivalent but then I remembered that, as far as we know, air-benders can also be spirit-benders. So what if Minato, the pride of the Air Nomads, took a journey into the Spirit World, fell in love with Kushina a fox spirit, and had a half-spirit half-human baby Naruto.

Then considering Kakashi’s white hair but lightning affinity I figured well… maybe his father was Water Tribe, therefore, moon-blessed but his mother was Fire Nation. Which could take the place of Sakumo’s failed mission–like, if he was considered a traitor to the tribe and so he left to have his family. But then Kakashi’s mother died and so Sakumo had no tribe, no wife, and a baby who he tried his best with. But grief/depression being what it is… well.

As for Yamato/Tenzo… I’ll be honest, I don’t know that much about him? Like… he’s got some Senju DNA and he was in ROOT/ANBU but not anymore? I dunno. Maybe I can have some kind of Dai Li subplot with him but… mreh.

Anyway, I figure this kind of happens concurrently with the series. So they’re all roughly the same age as the characters of the show. Even Aang and Naruto–Aang having been frozen in an iceberg and Naruto having some strange sort of slowed aging/immortality and having lived the century out. Well… maybe he was asleep too. I dunno. I know that throws off the Kakashi and Minato mentor/student relationship but I’m kind of fond of the idea…

Ooh! What if the Uchiha clan had Naruto sealed, but then Itachi did his whole massacre the clan thing but this time it was because he was such a principled person. Like, he couldn’t stand the idea that his clan’s success/status in the Fire Nation was because they had essentially enslaved a sentient being. So he kills them all (except Sasuke), sets Naruto free, then gets imprisoned. I dunno.

I also don’t want Sakura’s story to parallel Toph’s too much. Er, I suppose in my head her story would shake out a little bit to something like the shoujo manga Akagami no Shirayuki-hime. Aka Red-haired Snow White. In which a red-haired “commoner” is chosen to be a prince’s concubine because of her rare red hair, instead of agreeing, Shirayuki basically cuts off her hair, leaves for the neighboring kingdom in order to become a pharmacist/doctor, and accidentally meets/falls in love with the neighboring kingdom’s prince. It’s great, go read it, it’s super cute.

Character Analysis: Dreaming of Sunshine, Team Seven (2015-10-21)

A/N1: Because Chapter 105 reminded me about just how wonderfully ruthless and cunning Shikako really is, and I’m always a sucker for the categorization of things. As for the title–I’m not promising that I will do the other teams/characters, but I’m also not saying that I won’t.

On the TVTropes page, the members of Team Seven have already been labelled into their respective roles within the Freudian Trio / Four-Temperament Ensemble / Five-Man Band (don’t worry about the numbers, it will all make sense later). Which, for the most part, I agree with (my problem has more to do with how the website defines the roles than the allocation of them, but with TVTropes you really do have to read everything with a grain of salt).

However, I wanted to add some of my own analysis and labeling because, well, my brain thinks it’s fun. And maybe some of my fellow DoS fans will get some enjoyment out of reading this.

Here are the members of Team Seven and their respective allocations. The normal font is from the TVTropes site while the bolded and italicized are my own additions/adjustments.

The Freudian Trio

You’ve seen this before. You know what this is even if you don’t quite know the terminology behind it. It’s Kirk, Bones, and Spock. It’s Ron, Harry, and Hermione. Id, Ego, Superego.

According to Freud, an individual human mind is made of three parts. However in the media, we more often see these aspects of the psyche split between three different members of a group, making the team seem more cohesive if they are all parts of a greater whole rather than three distinct beings.

In it’s most known form, Id is the animalistic, emotions and instincts, Superego is the rational, logic and intellect, and Ego is the one stuck in between. Two polar opposites and the mediator.

Even without knowing which is which, it’s easy to describe Team Seven that way (even canon Team Seven at that). Naruto vs Sasuke, with Shikako as the mediator. And from the outset, with the most commonly used definitions and as a Team, I do agree with the TVTropes allocation–Naruto as Id, Shikako as Ego, Sasuke as Superego.

Naruto is more heart than logic, he is action first and reasoning later (if ever). Sasuke holds himself up to a higher standard (whether as an avenger or to Itachi or simply the idea of a strong shinobi). And Shikako is left juggling the two. From an outsider’s point of view it’s obvious, from a reader’s observatory point of view it makes sense.

But I propose that, as a story with Shikako as the protagonist–that is, from Shikako’s point of view–Naruto is the Superego while Sasuke is the Id.

This allocation also uses a slightly different interpretation of the Freudian Trio. Or, rather, emphasizing the motivations behind each part more so than the behavior.

The Id is emotions and instinct, yes, but it is animalistic. It is driven by a personal, self-centered, desire to survive above all. It is “if I am threatened, fight or flight.” It is “if I am weak, I must get stronger.” It is “if I want something, then I’ll take it.” It is “if I am hurt, retaliate.” It is Sasuke. Or rather, Shikako’s relationship with him.

He is a self-proclaimed avenger–he was hurt and now he wants to fix it. Everything about him–his need to grow stronger, his possessiveness over his friends, his fear and hatred of Itachi–it’s an animalistic reaction to the Uchiha Massacre. He wants revenge, he doesn’t want that to happen again; he needs power in order to fulfill both.

It’s these desires that Shikako keeps in mind when she interacts with him. If anything, she has to use logic to pull him away from his more destructive tendencies–the main one being the Curse Seal from Orochimaru: During the Konoha Chuunin Exam, she acknowledges that the Curse Seal is power, yes, but it’s going to prevent him from getting revenge. It’s poison, she says, it’s hurting him more than it will help him. And so he turns away from it. Before the Sasuke Retrieval arc, she knows he’s tempted by the easy route to power, and so she has to remind him that it’s in Konoha where both Itachi and Orochimaru became strong.

Even on her end, when she’s scared–of Itachi, of Danzo–she tells Sasuke. When she wants to get stronger, she trains with Sasuke (Konoha Chuunin Exam–speed training, Grass Chuunin Exam, sword training from Kakashi. Although this is mostly because the two of them simply have more opportunities what with Naruto’s vastly differing training needs. Arguably, though, there is Replacement Tag which Shikako and Sasuke both immediately knew had value whereas Naruto had to be coaxed into training). When she fights, when she is pushed into split-second, ruthless actions, it’s most often because Sasuke is in danger (Wave arc, when she took down Haku, Konoha Chuunin Exams against Orochimaru and the Sound genin, taking Sasuke’s place in the Tsukuyomi, etc. etc.)

In contrast there is her relationship with Naruto. A lot of her one-on-one interaction with him is cerebral–purposefully so, since she has been trying to improve his strategic thinking–but a surprising amount of it is her going to him for guidance. Shikako has, on multiple occasions, based her battle strategy on “What would Naruto do?” and that is when she has time to think before she acts. She looks to him as her moral compass as well–mercy, mainly–and if anything, she’s the one to tell him that pacifism isn’t practical.

Naruto is the idealist of the team, he wants power not for it’s intrinsic value, not as a weapon to hurt those who have hurt him, but to become Hokage; to protect the people and the village he loves, to be able to fulfill his promises. The Superego is logic and intellect, yes, but it idealism more than anything. It’s making decisions based on a higher standard of reasoning. It’s mercy towards your enemies, it’s the idea that you don’t have to fight to win, it’s making a goal and striving for it–not reactions to the past.

Hence, my proposition that–as relates to Shikako, the Ego–Naruto is the Superego while Sasuke is the Id.

Now Kakashi isn’t part of the trio (for obvious numeric reasons) because he kind of can’t be. The Freudian Trio is meant to showcase how a group grows and develops as a metaphor for a single person. But Kakashi is already grown–sure he’s become more in touch emotionally and having such troublemakers for students changes a person, but he’s essentially a separate being. Hence Kakashi being the Mentor which, obvious, since he’s literally their jounin sensei. But as an archetype/plot device, he is the team’s mentor. Where Shikako relates to Naruto through ideals, as a hope for the future, and she relates to Sasuke through needs, as a motivation for the present, her relationship with Kakashi is the past.

More than anything the Mentor is experience, she talks to him about remembering the night of the Kyuubi, she asks about his stories in the field. He’s not her moral compass or her survival instincts, but she goes to him for guidance because he has experience. In a way, she cannot change him because he’s past the point of being changed, and so unlike with Naruto and Sasuke (both of whom she can improve) Shikako isn’t worried about her affect on Kakashi, because he’s separate.

The Four-Temperament Ensemble

I’ll admit that I know the least about the Four-Temperament Ensemble as it is described in TvTropes and in general… mostly because it doesn’t really make sense to me? In a way, it’s a bit like Myers-Briggs, but it shakes down to three binaries rather than four and not every option matches a named Temperament unless one of the binaries is ignored.

Let me explain. The three binaries are: Extroversion vs Introversion, eMotional vs Rational, and People-oriented vs Task-oriented. This results in eight options, but only four are considered part of the Temperament Ensemble, as follows: EMP (Sanguine), IMP, ERT (Choleric), IRT, EMT, IMT (Melancholic), ERP, IRP (Phlegmatic).

Which means that one of the binaries doesn’t matter. I personally interpret the Extroversion vs Introversion to be the one that doesn’t matter (though you could consider it to be the eMotional vs Rational), which means that the Four Temperament Ensemble is really just based on two binaries. And that makes allocating roles to Team Seven very easy.

Naruto is very obviously emotional and people-oriented–hence, Sanguine. Kakashi is unmistakably rational(/unemotional/apathetic) and people-oriented (his role is literally to teach and protect his genin students), and so he is Phlegmatic. As for the two task-oriented members of Team Seven, well, I can interpret both of them as being either Choleric (rational task-oriented) or Melancholic (emotional task-oriented).

If you check the TVTropes page and its extensive list of characteristics related to the Four Temperaments, you can see how some of Choleric’s descriptions describe Sasuke and how some describe Shikako. Likewise with Melancholic. The overlap has to do with how each of them process emotions and rationality.

Sasuke, as I discussed in the above Freudian trio section, is emotionally driven, but he uses logic and his intellect when he acts. In contrast, Shikako is rationally driven–she needs to get stronger and help others get stronger because danger is approaching–but she uses her emotions(/relationships/other people’s emotions) in order to achieve her goals. Overall, I’d say Shikako and Sasuke are about fifty-fifty either way for Melancholic and Choleric.

The Five-Man Band

The Five-Man Band is, simply put, a group of five people who have complementary skills/personalities. Traditionally it consists of The Hero, The Lancer, The Smart Guy, The Big Guy, and The Chick. But that set up is fairly outdated, being rooted in media from the 60s/70s and all, so it’s not something that requires much analysis or investment. Basically, though, just don’t have too much overlap or repetition and you should be okay.

Since this is a team of four, obviously we either have to omit one or mash up two into a single role. Shikako is the latter because she is not just there to be the token girl (though, you might argue that canon Sakura is because Masashi Kishimoto is distressingly sexist). Anyway, that gives us Naruto as the Hero, Sasuke as the Lancer (aka the Anti-Hero), with Shikako being both the Smart Guy and the Chick (hence, Smart Chick), and Kakashi as the Big Guy (more as a role than a personality–in general, Big Guys are characterized to be more brawn than brain, but as a plot device they are the ones who end up fighting separately so the rest of the team can fight elsewhere). The explanation for these are pretty simple, so that’s all for this section.

Now is when I step away from the TVTropes and towards my usual battery of character analysis tests. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the related Keirsey-Bates Temperaments, Hogwarts Houses*, and D&D Alignment.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

As I mentioned above in the Four-Temperament Ensemble, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a set of four binaries which leads to a total of sixteen potential personality combinations. The binaries are: Extroversion vs Introversion, Sensing vs iNtuition, Thinking vs Feeling, and Judging vs Perceiving. It’s simple enough to apply the list of binaries to each character and figure out where on the spectrum they fall.

For Naruto there is no doubt he is an extrovert–especially in the technical sense of the word, in that he gains energy by being around large amounts of people. His enthusiasm and motivation is heavily dependent on others around him; even in canon, when he is alone, he turns quiet and pensive. While he does have some sensing tendencies–being a physical and hands-on learner–he is more intuitive. He’s known for solving problems in unusual ways, requires constant mental stimulation (either learning a new jutsu, playing a game, otherwise he’ll turn to pranking), and he’s a big picture/ideals kind of person.

For decision making, he’s unsurprisingly a feeler more than a thinker; and when it comes to interacting with the outside world he keeps his options open, preferring to react than plan everything out.

tl;dr Naruto is E(N/s)FP

In contrast, Sasuke is very obviously introverted–and not because he’s an anti-social jerk, but because he honestly works better with less people and he only emotionally connects with a few special individuals. He relies heavily on his senses, what he’s experienced for himself, and what he can immediately and tangibly influence. He will take things at face value and, especially in canon, rarely looks beyond the surface of a situation.

As previously stated, he has an odd contradiction of being emotionally-driven but logically-acting–so when it comes to Thinking vs Feeling he’s a little of both. However, because he very rarely considers what other people are feeling, he is more Thinking in the Myers-Briggs definition. As previously stated, he’s very task-oriented and focuses more on work and his goals almost to the point of blocking everything else out–making him more of a judger than a perceiver.

tl;dr Sasuke is IS(T/f)J

Shikako is an ambivert, that is, someone who is equally introverted and extroverted. Technically speaking, she is an introvert, in that she does get emotionally drained if she doesn’t have alone time of some sort to recharge herself. She doesn’t like people intruding into what she considers personal, but she does feel comfortable working in groups and collaborating and she has a wide range of friends–overall she’s slightly more introverted than extroverted. She is heavily intuitive when it comes to information processing–it could be argued that sort of knowing the future is cheating, but she uses that more as the bigger picture and only uses facts and figures to confirm as necessary.

In the Myers-Briggs definition, Shikako is more Thinking than Feeling, due to her practical and task-oriented nature. While she is adept at emotions, her own and others’, that in itself is more of a tool and definitely a lower priority than accomplishing her goals. Her judging vs perceiving type is slightly skewed when you consider, again, that she sort of knows the future. While on the outside it would seem like she’s a judger–making plans and working constantly to improve herself–she is more of a perceiver. Perceivers, as previously mentioned, do like to stay flexible and stay open to new information to better make decisions later. They work best with approaching deadlines and know to mix work and play so as not to burn themselves out–as someone who has lived her entire life as a series of incoming Big Bads–that she minimized her world changing, allowed herself a semblance of a childhood, and made sure to enjoy herself occasionally, shows how much more of a perceiver than a judger she is.

tl;dr Shikako is (I/e=A)NTP

Having already gone through the binaries in detail, I don’t think I need to explain why Kakashi is an introvert, a sensor, and a thinker. He is very much so like Sasuke in that–unsurprising, considering how frequently parallels are drawn between the two especially by Kakashi himself. As for the perceiving vs judging, well, I do think he is inherently a perceiver (simply put, he would rather observe than act, respond than instigate) but his training as a shinobi (and as the jounin in charge of the team/ex-ANBU captain) he does have to be a judger sometimes. He has to make decisions and act on them quickly and stick to the mission parameters–all of the chaos in Team Seven’s missions is in spite of what Kakashi decides and tries to do. It’s a bit of a toss up, really.

tl;dr Kakashi is IST(P/j)

The Keirsey Temperaments (also here)

The Keirsey Temperaments are somewhat related to Myers-Briggs, in that it groups the sixteen M-B types into four temperaments as follows: _S_J’s are Guardians, _S_P’s are Artisans, _NF_’s are Idealists, and _NT_’s are Rationals. The temperaments are then split again twice until, essentially, every Myers-Briggs type has a fancy title. The breakdown of how the temperaments are formed is the Sensing vs iNtuition–or, as Keirsey puts it, Concrete vs Abstract. Then the Concrete are split into organized vs adaptable–with Guardians being the former and Artisans the latter; while the Abstract are split into compassionate vs objective–Idealists the former and Rationals the latter.

From the above Myers-Briggs types for each member of Team Seven, we get Naruto as an Idealist (specifically, the Champion), Sasuke as a Guardian (specifically, the Inspector… though he does match the Protector more, which makes sense since he was in the middle for the Thinking/feeling spectrum), Shikako as a Rational (specifically, the Architect), and Kakashi as an Artisan (specifically, the Crafter). [For the specific titles, you can check out the second link provided for Keirsey Temperaments above, they are listed on the top left].

Idealists focus mostly on their hopes and the possibilities for the future. They act in good conscience, and try to reach their goals without breaking their personal code of ethics.

Guardians focus mostly on their duties and responsibilities. They act for the best of what is theirs to take care of, and try to meet the expectations and standards of society.

Rationals focus mostly on their problems and coming up with solutions to them. They act pragmatically, achieving their objectives as efficiently as possible, even ignoring rules and others if need be.

Artisans focus mostly on what is present, what they can get and what they can do. They act however is needed in order to get a quick and effective payoff, even if they have to bend the law to do so.

That sounds about right for Naruto, Sasuke, Shikako, and Kakashi respectively, doesn’t it?

Hogwarts Houses (yeah, that’s right, I went there)

For some reason, Hogwarts House sorting is really subjective, so this more than any other section is my opinion. I don’t actually believe that every group of four must be sorted into each House, but if they had to then this is how I think it would go:

Naruto is the most Gryffindor that has ever Gryffindor-ed that I’m surprised he isn’t an actual lion. His courage, his idealism, his recklessness, even his prankster sensibilities? Total Gryffindor.

Shikako, especially after we’ve been so thoroughly reminded in Chapter 105, is Slytherin. A very conscientious one, but still Slytherin. She’s cunning, resourceful, pragmatic, and if you consider her ambition is to “survive Akatsuki and Pein and Madara” then, yes, she is very ambitious.

I personally have a soft spot for the rabid-badger Hufflepuff idea–that is, a Hufflepuff who isn’t a total pushover congenial, but is fiercely loyal and hard-working and determined to the point where it’s like having a rabid badger on a leash. And, well, DoS Sasuke really does fit the bill for that (not canon Sasuke–who has been so broken and twisted and consumed by anger and vengeance that he wouldn’t know loyalty if it wore bright orange and yelled about friendship in front of him). He is undeniably hard-working and determined, training just as hard as Naruto to become stronger, and he is so loyal to his team–jumping in front of Naruto during Wave arc, trusting what Shikako says even when she can’t tell him everything. (A moment of silence for pre-Curse Seal canon Sasuke, who could have and should have been like DoS Sasuke.)

Which leaves Kakashi with Ravenclaw. Not that I’m just assigning the leftovers for last, because I do actually think Kakashi fits Ravenclaw best. If not that, then probably also Hufflepuff, buuuut… well. Like I said, this section is presuming that a group of four must be sorted into each House. Anyway, he is intelligent, but he’s also… hm… not curious, necessarily, but he needs to know what is going on. It’s hard to tell from an outsider point of view since he is so seemingly apathetic, but that has more to do with him being able to observe while looking like he’s ignoring people. He’s known for having a ridiculous lexicon of jutsu and creating his own. Shikako is similar, but where she accumulates knowledge for power, he just knows stuff because it’s cool or interesting.

*(Sometimes I also do Avatar Elements–Air, Water, Earth, Fire–but I thought that would be a little confusing considering there are elemental affinities in the Naruto world. And, anyway, I usually do it as more of a “what if these character were in an Avatar AU fic” but since this is an analysis of characters already in a fic that would be too much)

D&D Alignment

This gives the least insight to their personalities, but it does help with behaviors so if you want to write recursive DoS fanfic this may help out. Mostly I just really find D&D Alignment fun to talk about.

D&D Alignment is a categorization of the ethical and moral perspectives of the characters. There are two axes which combine to create nine alignments in total. It looks like this:

Lawful Good             Neutral Good          Chaotic Good
                                             |
Lawful Neutral ——- True Neutral ——- Chaotic Neutral
                                             |
Lawful Evil                  Neutral Evil               Chaotic Evil

The X-axis is Lawful vs Chaotic, and the Y-axis is Good vs Evil. Self-explanatory.

Naruto is undoubtedly Chaotic Good–he doesn’t care for the system as it is now, it’s why he’s so effective as a Hero because he’s going to change the violent world of shinobi into something that can sustain peace.

Shikako is Chaotic Neutral–well, she self-identifies as chaotic. Her lawful leaning is mostly because she knows if she steps too far out of line Danzo will be there–because while she does want to defeat the bad guys, that’s more of a side-effect of making sure everyone she cares about is strong enough to survive. The world saving is just a bonus to her.

Sasuke is True Neutral–like Shikako, his motivations are fairly self-serving but they’re not actively harming anyone who isn’t identified as evil. And while he’s way less chaotic than his teammates, he’s still a part of team trouble–rules are more like suggestions than orders.

Kakashi is Neutral Good, edging into True Neutral–at heart, he does want to do good but he doesn’t really know what that is except for “what would Obito/Minato-sensei/Rin/Kushina do?” (I’d rant more, but my Kakashi feels don’t belong in this post). As for lawful vs chaotic, well, it’s been repeatedly mentioned how his status as an elite jounin essentially makes him an exception to the rules. He could follow them–like, no doubt, the other jounin sensei do–but he doesn’t have to so he won’t.

A/N2: Aand that’s all, folks. You can tell I got kind of tired towards the end. If you got this far, then wow. Congrats. Hope you found this enjoyable and/or potentially useful.

Into Thin Air x Naruto drabble (2015-05-27)

Spiky blonde hair and bright blue eyes?

Well, zie can’t deny it–the kid would be a shoe-in for Nibelheim’s most infamous siblings. And vice versa apparently.

Hir grasp of the Wutaian language is shaky to passable; on top of that, what the people speak here isn’t quite the same. More like a distant relative. Or descendant.

The kid is staring at hir with wide hopeful eyes, somehow more painfully earnest than hir brother during his most naive moments. He hasn’t looked away from hir since he and his team entered the room.

It’s fair, since zie keeps hir own gaze darting around, only briefly landing on him before moving on.

The old man next to hir plays at being feeble and soft, but zie knows better. Zie would be defeated quite soundly if it came to it. And that’s not including the two hidden guards, or the silver-haired man slouching against the wall.

Zie tries not to shudder in apprehension. It’s the same color as General Sephiroth’s hair, though far more unruly. He might be a clone. Zie can’t tell, due to the mask and strange slanted headband. It wouldn’t be a surprise, considering the Strife look alike.

Perhaps this is all a hallucination, or a fever dream. Aren’t dreams supposed to take faces and images from real life?

The stoic black haired boy might as well be a young Vincent in blue instead of red.

But that wouldn’t make any sense. Because as far as zie remembers, zie’s dead. Dead dead dead dead dead.

And not ever coming back.

That’s what happens when you get stabbed through the heart by a sword taller than you.

But…

No. Dead.

But zie did die in the Forgotten Capital of the Ancients. In place of the Last Ancient. Surely…

The old man says something to the kid, which somehow makes his stare even more intense. The lone visible eye of the masked clone widens slightly.

So something… significant, but not dangerous. The pink-haired girl, at least, hasn’t given hir more than a passing glance. A mildly shocked look, before fading away into polite disinterest.

The old man then says something to hir. Which zie doesn’t understand why, considering they’ve already hit up against a serious language barrier.

But he writes down something, and while the oral language is an effort in futility, the written language at least is comprehensible.

Name.

He passes the pen over to hir, a prompt for hir to answer.

There is no reason to lie. So zie doesn’t.

Namikaze, zie learned long ago, is written with the kanji for waves and wind. But a more poetic interpretation of the name is strife. It’s easy enough to remember, and convenient, as it encompasses hir full born name.

Namikaze, zie later learns, is the name of a dead hero.

A hero with spiky blonde hair and bright blue eyes.

A/N: Yet another terrible crossover with and OC. This time, my genderfluid twin sibling of Cloud Strife, aka Windy Strife aka Winter the Turk aka many other things, wakes up in the world of Naruto after hir death (which… spoilers?… I was going to have hir die trying to protect Aerith from Sephiroth).

I don’t really have a cohesive outline/plot for this. It was a random idea I had when I was at work and then I had to wait until I got home to type it out so it’s a bit haphazard than I would normally do.

Don’t think I’m going to continue this, anyway, since the whole language barrier thing would get really annoying and unwieldy pretty early in.
