Okay, Jiro it is! I still have a ways to go to catch up, but I do have a few ideas for specific plot points. Would giving Jiro a crush on Kiba be too much? Or just enough?

I was also thinking Kiba! šŸ˜€ But, I mean, I was specifically thinking one-sided Jiro/Kiba? Mostly because I love some one-sided pining!character A and oblivious!character B who is so damned friendly and gregarious that it makes character A’s crush all the worse. It’s soooooo good.

But a mutual Jiro/Kiba would be okay, too, I suppose.

I’m wondering, though, what about Shino? I feel like he’d have a solid grip on his own identity–a steadiness that Jiro would appreciate–though I guess it depends on what kind of personality Jiro has to see what that dynamic would be…

So I’m really behind on DoS stuff and I’m just now attempting to get back into it. (And I’m sorry I’m not good at maintaining conversations with people regularly!) But I was curious if you’ve thought any about the Team Medic AU since we last discussed it? My personal thought was that I’m definitely making either Jiro or Youbirin gay, but I’m not sure which yet. (It was actually that thought of forcing representation into the universe with my own two hands that made me want to get back into DoS.)

Hello again! I was a little worried that I had somehow offended you with my overeagerness to talk about Team Medic AU–like I had completely jumped the gun and put pressure on you to do a thing that you were only tentatively thinking of doing. I hope that’s not how I come off across as–I just really love brainstorming and was pretty excited to brainstorm with someone else and not just by myself. šŸ˜€

DoS is quite the undertaking–even when we first corresponded it was maybe eighty chapters? And now it’s over a hundred so it’s definitely a marathon of a fic, not a sprint. Silver Queen recently updated the chapter titles to include story arcs so if you want to pace yourself but find single chapters not enough you can read by arcs instead.

I have actually thought a bit more about the Team Medic AU–though unfortunately I haven’t really noted them down much anywhere because I didn’t want to hijack the AU when it really is a collaboration. I remember it was mostly some world-building though? I remember seeing this post regarding money in the Naruto world and I rambled a bit about how the calculations might be correct but how the values might not be (since inflation rates would be different due to the differing technologies) towards the end I wondered what exactly shinobi were spending their money on, and while I didn’t follow that line of thought at that time I think I wanted to in a Team Medic mindset.

Especially considering that those mission rates are probably Konoha-specific and it’s basically canon that Konoha has the best healthcare of all the villages (and maybe Fire Nation has the best of all the countries as a result?) then I wonder if there’s something going on there. Like… is Konoha so advanced that they have free healthcare and everywhere else is still doing pay out of pocket? Or is there health insurance companies? Is it only free for active shinobi (and their dependents)? Does this in fact extend beyond Konoha into the rest of the country? How much do medics get paid? There are probably medics who specialize in different things but do certain ā€œdepartmentsā€ get paid more/are more prestigious?(Sorry, I was an Econ major so my brain got caught on this track for a while).

And all of this shakes out to, basically, figuring out how the Medic Corps works and how Team Medic would fit into it. Because the Medic Corps are comprised of the ā€œcivilians with chakraā€ and the Academy graduates that didn’t get onto a jounin team and didn’t want to just be shuffled into the regular Genin Corps–so Team Medic would be a little outside of the usual Medic Corps process of training but still likely in line with it considering their sensei would be–as we discussed here – a combat-medic on sabbatical of sorts.

I also had some Suzu/Nohara clan thoughts on behalf of Youbirin–trying to figure out what their clan would be like in order to figure out his personal storyline better. Like… exactly how large/prestigious are they? Are they ambitious? Are they strict? Do they actually have any secret clan abilities? Is Youbirin clan heir? Those sorts of thoughts.

As for making either Jiro or Youbirin gay, I say go for it–specifically, go for whichever one would make a) sense for that character and b) an interesting story whether or not it includes a romantic subplot (I say this because being LGBT+ is more about a sense of identity than the actual attraction).

Maybe consider, also, a bisexual Sakura? Like–it’s canon that she is attracted to men but it’s never been specifically stated she’s NOT attracted to women as well, and I’m of the mind that unless it’s been explicitly stated/proven then anything goes? Even with Shikako–though this is more because SQ wants to keep the story gen–she’s never given any hints about what she might (not) be attracted to… It’s my personal headcanon that she’s biromantic ace but everyone’s interpretations are different and, until Word of God says otherwise, completely valid.

As for ā€œforcing representation into the universe,ā€ well, the ships for DoS are very het-populated, but I’m pretty sure that’s the fault of Masashi Kishimoto for having so few female characters that just strictly statistically speaking there are more guys than girls to ship Shikako with. Literally, there are at least twice as many potential het ships for Shikako because there are at least twice as many guys as girls. In fact, given SQ’s creation of the kunoichi study group, she’s increased female interaction such that there are more opportunities for Shikako to be shipped with one of the other kunoichi.

I’m not really on top of the entirety of DoS ships, but as far as I knew it was mostly about who Shikako might end up with? I wasn’t aware that there were any non-Shikako ships being discussed, although the argument could be made that since DoS!Sasuke is vastly different to canon!Sasuke that shipping him with a character would be an entirely distinct experience from the canon!Sasuke shipping. I was a wee NaruSasu shipper back in the day (pre-Shippuden, because NaruSasu in Shippuden is just so toxic it makes me sad) but I can definitely say that a NaruSasu ship would manifest differently in the DoS universe.

Now, to step away from my vague ranting, if it is a matter of either Jiro OR Youbirin, I’m really unsure… actually… well… what I’m worried about is–given the plan we had for Youbirin being mentored by Kabuto–it might edge into even creepier exploitation. We already made an Orochimaru comparison, but I’d be really uncomfortable about having Kabuto essentially grooming Youbirin in the psychological manipulation definition. And you know Kabuto would take advantage of any weakness Youbirin shows–and Youbirin wouldn’t know that it even is a weakness to be hidden. Basically, for Youbirin to be betrayed by his senpai/mentor is one thing–but for him to be betrayed by (presumably) his first crush? Who exploited him? (uh… no thank you)

Whereas with Jiro it can be a part of his discovering his self-identity character development. You can do a romantic subplot without it being creepy, and you can even have it be one-sided without it being squicky like with Youbirin and Kabuto. Actually, it’d be interesting if Jiro had a crush on Youbirin but eventually grew out of it? Like, maybe the hanger-on thing during the Academy was the expression of that childhood crush but after they graduate it kind of fades or maybe Jiro deliberately lets it go (but Youbirin will still be his friend and teammate, which is basically family). And maybe he gets a crush on someone else–maybe Neji, if you want the drama–someone who is so definitively Konoha that it kind of ties together with his ā€œloyalty is to people not to an ideaā€ subplot.

Uh… I think I answered everything? And, of course, feel free to hit me up for more brainstorming. If you like, you can make a post of it on your blog and either tag me in it or just send me the link that way I can just reblog it and you won’t be limited to the ask or messaging system.

It’d be nice to correspond with you again šŸ™‚

Fake Fic Summaries 13/?, the Princesses in Towers edition (2016-04-03)

A/N: Having seen this magnificent post both the fic and the original idea that prompted it, my own brain went into overdrive about possible twists in the “princess in a tower” trope. So here are a few because maybe one day I’d like to revisit them when my brain isn’t so bleurgh.

~

1) The one where multiple princesses are being held in a tower at the same time and it’s kind of like prison but mostly a really good opportunity for networking and preventing wars and they band together to escape

2) The one where the multiple princesses are supposed to compete and the last princess standing gets to marry the prince but two of them fall in love, one of them wants to keep her own kingdom, etc. etc. no one marries the prince (unless they want to)

3) The one where the multiple princesses all have curses of some sort which actually turn out to be pretty cool and basically like superpowers and instead of staying put they decide to become a roving band of crime fighters

4) The one where a singular princess, super misanthropic, gets imprisoned in a magical tower that literally takes care of all her needs, refuses to leave. Especially not to marry some useless dill weed. Becoming a wizard is optional.

5) The one where a singular princess imprisoned in tower keeps getting letters asking for advice/solutions to problems–answers with very heartfelt and serene words of wisdom. Many strangers use communication rather than magic/violence. Turns out, she’s been getting a wizard’s mail and he hers. He also may have solved her problem with magic/violence. But it works out in the end, maybe.

6) The one where a singular princess seeks out a tower currently inhabited by a wizard. Asks for training, persists in asking even when he sets up terrible tasks for her to “prove her worth.” Eventually becomes magical–unsure if because tasks somehow teach her or if wizard finally gives in

7) The one where technically a singular princess in a tower, except all towers are the same Tower, and so it’s multiple princesses (either via ghosts or the barriers between dimensions are thin or spiritual projection over time etc) who can speak to each other etc trying to solve a (murder?) mystery together

A/N: That’s it for now.

Fake Fic Summaries 12/?, the Return and Twist edition (2016-04-01)

A/N: So these are fic ideas that have been plaguing my mind and preventing me from doing anything else… so here’s a way to purge my desktop of all the files…

~

This first one, I don’t really want to do as fanfic but the brainstorming is originating that way, so maybe if I can figure out how to twist it into definitively original fic I’ll return and do so. But I can’t quite figure out how to pull it out of the context so here’s this mess of a brainstorm.

Mare vs Spare

The heir, the spare, and the mare: the Sawada twins were only ever meant to be the latter two–until all the viable heirs in line before them were killed off. Now both of them are left fighting each other for a role neither of them want.

Family is supposed to be everything.

So, basically: the Tsuna’s female!twin story

Okay, so why is this interesting to me? Well besides the fact that the dearth of women in Katekyo Hitman Reborn continues to be a pain in my heart, I haven’t actually seen a twin sister fic for KHR. I’ve seen PLENTY of twin brother (ie a “Gary Tsuna” who is generally evil and so real Tsuna has to take over as Decimo in order to bring peace to Vongola etc etc) but not twin sister fic which is actually really interesting to me because usually… twin sister fic is the go to for exploring a fandom.

Anyway, the fake summary sort of touches on what appeals to me about this: because there is misogyny in KHR–even the fictional magical version of the mafia are very clearly sexist–and so a twin sister of Tsuna would suffer the brunt of that. Even if Tsuna is the unlikely spare to the Vongola family, his sister (who I have for now named Nina to go with the whole 27 thing; but also, maybe she’s named Giannina or something) would be at best considered a potential marriage token. Or, skeevier, a way to strengthen the bloodline if one of the Ninth’s sons actually lived.

Which lysapadin’s A Year in the Life (it’s absolutely fantastic, go read it. Though, warning: it’s WIP and possibly abandoned) explores really well with a female!Tsuna. But the reason why I specifically want a female twin is because then the “spare” and the “mare” would have equal claims to the “throne” and while traditionally the spare would win out–it’s literally in the name, spare heir–Tsuna is No Good.

Vongola has had a female Boss before (just the one, but one is enough for precedent) so it would then be a decision between which civilian would they rather have as a mafia boss: the subpar boy or the probably average girl? But then, there’s also the aspect of Guardians.

I’d want Tsuna’s canon Guardians to stick with him and they are all very powerful indeed. But I want to see other characters become Nina’s Guardians. I want to see Kyoko and Haru and Hana and I-pin and Bianchi become Guardians. I want Nina to see people who are being disregarded because of their gender and make them hers. I want Fran to be their token guy… maybe… I don’t really know much about Fran.

Actually, no. I don’t want these characters in this world with this strange magical mafia. I want this situation in a different universe. I want the political ramifications of this scenario transcribed into an original fic.

For this second one, I actually wrote a few paragraphs before it stuttered to a stop. In part because I know where I want to go next but not quite how to bridge between the beginning and the meat of the actual story. And also, in part, because I realized I was writing fanfiction of a fanfiction of an OC who writes fanfiction for a movie that’s about a movie. Basically: ever heard of the movie Galaxy Quest? Well, there’s a fanfiction called SMOF by hollimichele that you may be interested in and which I highly recommend. Especially if you’re going to continue reading my recursive fanfic for it.

SMOF (the every story’s a love story remix)

It’s not like they have an understanding (except for maybe how they might) but Brandon and Casey sort of have… a thing.

The kind of thing that two (or more) people might have an understanding about. If said understanding hadn’t ever been verbally acknowledged and more implied in a very roundabout way in the less than two months they interacted with each other… which wasn’t even entirely in person.

Okay, so maybe it’s more of an understanding about having an understanding but, well, it’s certainly more than either of them would have expected given her previously antagonistic opinion towards his mere reputation and his complete lack of awareness of her until Katelyn almost literally shoved it in his face.

“Read it,” she had said, once Brandon stopped squawking about being unable to see, breathe, whatever, stop whining, and don’t mess it up. She paid good money for a print version, “It’s great.”

It wasn’t as if Brandon held himself above fanzines–he is, above all else, a fan and it doesn’t matter how big his name is in the fandom or what secrets he’s privy to or even what his impending job prospects are–but with all the recent goings on he hadn’t really had as much time to enjoy the fandom as he used to. Not when the fandom aspect of his life was stretching out beyond hobby and into something bigger and more encompassing.

But in a way, reading the fanzine was sort of like preparing for his new job. Or at least the handing off of his old one. Or maybe the …..

aaand that’s all I got. Basically, I wanted it to be a year long getting-to-know-you-long-dstance-and-then-fall-in-love kind of deal with Brandon in space trying not to die and Casey on Earth trying not to have an entire fandom implode. Nerds in love, basically.

I actually do want to figure out how to finish this one as recursive fanfic (if hollimichele isn’t, like, horrifically offended by this) but there’s just this massive block and it’s been on my desktop for a week. I also reread to see if Casey’s pronouns were specified in any way but they actually weren’t which is cool.Ā I used she/her so that I can keep track of which pronouns are Brandon’s and which are Casey’s, and also because the only Casey I know in real life goes by she/her, but I know Casey is a gender-neutral name so I might revisit this with a he/him or they/them Casey? I probably ought to have more written before worrying about that.

~

A/N: This is not an April Fool’s thing… I just really couldn’t think of what to write? Also I got home from work super late again so…

2/2 1: The plot device at the museum/in Konoha has a timer and automatically sends them back. 2: Encounter with dimension crossing Sharingan via Akatsuki/Kaguya forces them back. or 3: Forces from Auradon either pull them back arrive via Magic wand to re-imprison them on the Isle, much to the displeasure of Konoha, or arrive in Konoha for the same reason and a similar response. Personaly, even after a 4th shinobi war, I think Konoha would kick Auradons butt.

(related to this previous brainstorm)

Given that Auradon has spent the past two decades banishing all of their villains to an island and all of their knights/princes are athletes instead of warriors, there’s no question that Konoha would totally own Auradon if it came to that. Heck, even in canon Descendants I’m pretty sure the Lost kids could take down the rest of the school–including the Fairy Godmother–if they really wanted to. Obviously, they’d have to use the advantage of surprise, and this is with the wand out of play (not even with Mal, just not with the Fairy Godmother). And by taking out the school they’d effectively have all of the children of the royal families hostage and thus the rest of the kingdom but…

…

Wait… what were we talking about?

…

Oh, right. The crossover!

Actually, now that I think about it some more, I wonder if the Lost kids shouldn’t be somehow summoned directly from the Isle of the Lost a few years before the events of the Descendants movie. Such that they are the same age as the Konoha twelve and grow up alongside them through to Shippuden. At which point they’d be at the right age for the events of Descendants to occur.

That way its a summoning on both ends–someone in Konoha on one side, then the Fairy Godmother, by request of the king to be, on the other. That way it puts the least suspicion on the Lost kids’ appearance–and the being pulled away from their home(s) twice makes for some additional story drama.

Now, whether or not Konoha is going to try to retrieve them… well. It depends on the specifics of how they disappear. But definitely for sure they will try to make their way back to their ā€œrealā€ home–and given that Carlos would be a weapons AND seals specialist, they would have a decent chance of doing it.

From the Auradon side, depending on what they know, they could view the matter as ā€œsavingā€ them. As in movie canon, the way Ben was ā€œsavingā€ them from the Isle by offering them an opportunity to get better education etc. Or, if somehow Fairy Godmother knew they were being used as child soldiers, then ā€œsavingā€ them from that fate.

Which the Lost kids don’t appreciate because they’re probs all chuunin/jounin level after 3-4 years of training which means they are used to being treated as adults by shinobi standards.

I dunno. There’s definitely lots of interesting possibilities you can play around with here, anon. How do the Lost kids affect Konoha’s timeline–does Sasuke defect when shown examples of kids who actually have worse family than he does? Does Danzo try to muscle his way into their group and get outed to Sandaime early on? Does being half-fairy give Mal some kind of bijuu-esque advantages? I have no idea, but it’s interesting to think about.

I love your descendants fics, especially the Carlos focused ones, and have been enjoying the DoS drabbles. However, reading and re-reading my favorites over and over again has sent me to a world where Carlos ends up getting help for his dog fears from the Inuzuka, resulting in Dude eventually growing up to be a horse sized dog, like Akamaru does in shippuden, and protecting Carlos from all harm. That is all.

Carlos and the Inuzuka?

…

O_O

…

Oh, anon, you have no idea what kind of brainstorming bunny you have unleashed!

Okay, so, let’s say–as in my Once Then Always brainstorm–the Lost kids are transported to a different world via magical artifacts during the museum heist. After they have some life-changing adventures, they are transported back to Auradon with little to no time passing. (Unfortunately, this is before Carlos meets Dude, but this does not prevent Carlos from adopting Dude later.)

Like with Once Then Always, I would like to have each of the Lost kids have a unique self-discovery journey of their own. Carlos overcoming his fear of dogs (and shitty parenting) with the Inuzuka is pretty straightforward–but what about the others?

But, before that, how does Konoha react to four random teenagers appearing in their village?

Since we do want Carlos to be fostered (or at least not threatened) by the Inuzuka, that means that the Lost kids can’t be seen as infiltrators/enemies/threats. Which means that their appearance has to be either planned by Konoha or, at least, the result of something Konoha did.

Maybe some kind of summoning seal? Or maybe an Uzumaki artifact?

I’m also unsure when in the Naruto timeline I would want this to be–before the Chuunin Exams? After it, but before the Sasuke retrieval arc? Or full on in Shippuden?

I’ll admit I’ve been spoiled by Dreaming of Sunshine and no longer have the patience to put up with Sasuke’s defection melodrama, but I suppose in that case this could be a DoS crossover instead of a canon Naruto crossover… In which case, it’s perfectly plausible that the Lost kids are summoned by Shikako.

Uh, but this crossover would want to focus on the Lost kids… So *insert plot reason for Konoha to trust them* and now the Lost kids are being fostered/trained by Konoha. I like to imagine that–given the terrible living circumstances of the Isle–that the Lost kids are at the very least genin level.

Jay was quick to pick up tourney (which is based off lacrosse which is, in and of itself, based off a ceremonial ritual of symbolic warfare) and, after a few days, so was Carlos. Mal I headcanon to be physically stronger than Carlos, Evie I’m not so sure? I know in the book she was dangerously underweight–then again, all of them are probably suffering from some sort of malnutrition…

Anyway, I wonder if, at first, the Lost kids are split up for training. Probably they’d be treated as one family so they’d get to live together, but while Konoha may tentatively trust the Lost kids ~for reasons~ they wouldn’t be so stupid as to leave a group of unknowns together and unsupervised.

In a different brainstorm for DoS (Team Medic which I made with @kuipernebula) I proposed that an additional genin team would be dispersed amongst the Rookie Nine after the Sound/Sand Invasion that way each team has a medic-nin specifically suited for the team and the genin can begin to get used to the four chuunin team set up instead of the three genin one jounin set up.

The fact that there are four Lost kids as opposed to three genin medic nins is easily fixed by adding Team Gai to the mix. So that means each Lost kid is assigned to a different genin team.

For reasons described above, we would want Carlos to end up with Team Eight–so that he can overcome his fear of dogs via Kiba and Akamaru (and the Inuzuka clan in general). Given that Jay’s subplot in Descendants was about teamwork I would think that Team Ten would be the best analog given that their clans are practically bred for teamwork (the Hyuuga/Aburame/Inuzuka team set up isn’t one that the clans reflect).

Which leaves Team Gai and the pile of drama that is Team Seven–either canon or DoS versions. Given that Mal is the main character of Descendants it makes the most sense for her to be put on Team Drama–also given that her character arc is about her defying ā€œnatureā€ and nurture and choosing good over evil, that would probably resonate very well with Team Seven, especially with Naruto–the optimistic protagonist with a demon sealed inside him versus the conflicted daughter of an evil fairy.

And so Evie is left with Team Gai. Which is actually pretty interesting because Team Gai is the only one without a clan heir, aka a ā€œprinceā€ or ā€œprincessā€. Can that help Evie overcome her obsession with marrying her very own prince? Maaaaybe…

However, as kuipernebula and I discussed with Team Medic, there has to be some kind of in-story reason as to why the Hokage (either Sandaime or Tsunade) would assign it in this way. But we also figured that it’s pretty easy to argue any given set up. Obviously Konoha will prioritize function over feelings, but we have to figure out what about each Lost kid makes them a good match for each genin team.

Team Ten I actually find easiest to explain because Jay is the physically strongest and most capable of the four Lost kids. Given Team Ten’s set up–that is, the Ino-Shika-Cho and Asuma–if you take Asuma out of the equation (as he would be if all of the genin became chuunin) then the Ino-Shika part of the equation is very low on offensive abilities meaning they’d need another ā€œheavy hitterā€ to even out the new team of four. Whether that means he acts as protector to the stationary Ino and Shikamaru, or as another bulldozer alongside Chouji depends on plot.

Team Seven, also, is pretty easy–Team Seven have ā€œhistoricallyā€ been the legendary, potential S-class teams. All members have been, in some way or another, ninjutsu buffs minus, maybe, Nohara Rin but for all we know she could very well have been, too. So of Carlos, Evie, and Mal, the one who would most likely be able to keep up with Team Seven would be Mal who has access to her mother’s magic spell book (aka family ninjutsu).

That being said, I’m not too sure what Carlos and Evie’s skills translate best to in the Naruto world. Because Carlos in the books is all about technology which… there isn’t much of in the Naruto world, whereas Evie has her magic mirror and her potion knowledge (love potion and the one that knocked out Chad) which is… ?

But, okay, let’s stretch the definition of technology for Carlos–that could mean either weaponry or seals. Which is a heavy overlap with TenTen–too much overlap, I’d say, but that’s not enough of a reason alone. If Team Eight’s specialty is tracking, then why would Carlos–a weapons/sealing specialist be added? Well, if this is about jumping from genin level to chuunin level, Team Eight wouldn’t just be tracking cats or missing items. They’d be tracking people–possibly enemies. So, for example, if they’re tracking missing nin, they’d have to be prepared for traps of all kind. Hence, weapons/sealing.

And, again, Evie is the most difficult… the potion knowledge could easily be linked to poisons and medicine, while the magic mirror is… I mean, there was that crystal ball that the Sandaime had in the very first episode and which was never brought up again, but I don’t know what I would call that. Not genjutsu… Actually, it’s a bit like the Yamanaka–information gathering and the thinly veiled flower shop poison/medical knowledge–without the whole body-swapping.

How does that benefit Team Gai? Well, as they are before the time skip they taijutsu experts with one weapons/sealing expert. They are a team well designed for either body guarding or taking out non-enhanced human enemies like bandits. With one set of Byakugan and their sensei’s implied talent in genjutsu (which might be passed on to TenTen) they have the makings of a possible espionage team. Add Evie into the mix and they can easily handle infiltration missions, especially if it’s in non-shinobi places.

Now, what is the actual plot going to be? I have no idea… but I actually think this crossover would be more about the Lost kids going back to Auradon after all is said in done, and how their changed attitudes influence the Descendants story. The Lost kids have already had their character arcs happen in Konoha so what is left?

Well, while Konoha may be known as the tree-hugger/soft village–they are still a shinobi village. Despite Naruto’s well-meaning nindo, shinobi are mercenary at heart–they kill and steal and all sorts of nefarious deeds for money or ā€œvillage security.ā€ So while the Lost kids may not be ā€œevilā€ anymore, they’re more at ā€œneutralā€ than ā€œgood.ā€ And if the Lost kids have been in the Naruto world through to Shippuden then they’ve been at war and very well might be experiencing PTSD. So now they have to get used to peace–just like what the epilogue of Naruto skipped over.

Tbh, I don’t think I’ll write it–only because it does have a lot of overlap with my Once Then Always and if I had to choose I would prefer to write OTA–but it was fun to think about. So thanks, anon! I know this wasn’t a prompt, but this was great šŸ™‚

(continued here)

how do you think people in the dos universe would react to Shikako dating? especially those close to her and protective of her (Kakashi, Sasuke, Naruto, Shikamaru, etc).

Well I sort of wrote a thing regarding Naruto, Sasuke, and Shikamaru reacting to Shikako dating (or at least, the idea of her secretly dating someone) in Don’t Hold Back… But I guess since they were mostly blindsided by the secrecy, it’s a different situation entirely…

Hm… Kakashi would be fairly hands off (though quietly menacing in the background) whereas with Naruto and Sasuke it would depend an awful lot on who exactly Shikako is dating. Naruto would get over it quicker, so long as everyone involved is happy, though if it were someone like, say, Kiba he’d probably loudly argumentativeā€“ā€Really? Dog Breath?ā€

Sasuke would. Well, I headcanon that Sasuke has very mixed feelings about Shikako. Like obviously, he loves her, but even he’s unsure if that’s platonic or romantic love. So at first brush, he’d probably be mildly jealous regardless of who Shikako is dating, and only slowly let it go once he comes to terms with his feelings for her and once Shikako’s significant other proves themselves asĀ ā€œworthyā€ of dating her. Like, for example, if it were Gaaraā€“ā€But is he strong enough?ā€Ā ā€œSasuke, he isĀ literally the Kazekage.ā€Ā ā€œSo?ā€

Shikamaru, given his continued overprotectiveness and attempts to manipulate Shikako into being safe, would probably mess with Shikako’s significant other so badly. Just like, constant head games and Shikamaru bribing Academy students to annoy the shit out of them… that sort of thing. Because if they can’t handle small obstacles in their daily life, there’s no way that Shikamaru is going to give his approval. He probably pulls theĀ ā€œfuture clan headā€ card at least once as well as theĀ ā€œwhat are your intentions towards my sister?ā€ Basically, Shikaku and Yoshino don’tĀ really have to do anything because Shikamaru’s got the vetting process down to an art form.

Shikako, of course, is not impressed with any of this. It’s so unfair!Ā No one put TenTen through all this when she started dating Shikamaru!

To which TenTen repliesā€“ā€Really? You think Ino didn’t put me through a gauntlet?ā€

Hahaha, I dunno. Something like that, I guess.

Untitled Naruto/DoSxKHR brainstorm (2016-02-03)

Because I did this and now I can’t stop thinking about one of the ideas, so I need to purge it before I can do anything else.

Okay, so I’m going with the same organized crime set up that the “mafia” in Katekyo Hitman Reborn has. So the “yakuza” of this world is comprised of eleven clans–there used to be twelve clans but the Uzumaki were almost completely wiped out over a decade ago–though many clans are no longer just one family. For example, the Hatake clan, also on the brink of extinction, only has one actual member of the clan name; but it has other people who are part of the clan. Such as Rock Lee, the protege of Maito Gai who is the Hatake clan’s second in command.

The Uchiha clan is a strange topic because while every clan has a “specialty” of sorts (for example, the Akimichi are “import/export specialists” and the Shimura are “antique weapons dealers”) theirs was being part of law enforcement. It was why they were so powerful amongst the yakuza clans because they literally were able to get the other clans out of jail. For a fee, of course (I mean… I’m thinking the Yamanaka might be lawyers? But they’re pretty well known for being defense lawyers for yakuza members, whereas the Uchiha were double agents).

Until one Uchiha member betrayed their clan and double/triple-crossed them to internal affairs. Now all of the clans have to keep a far lower profile than they used to enjoy. Although, in general, the clans were moving away from actual crimes and into more legitimate ventures.

Except one clan does not like this. The one clan who specializes in the yakuza continuing to be deadly and at odds with each other. That’s right, the Shimura clan [of course, later, it gets out the Danzo was responsible so all sorts of bullshit, like it is in canon (such as the destruction of the Uzumaki, the large-scale imprisonment/seppuku of the Uchiha, etc.)] But for now that’s a secret. All anyone knows is that the yakuza world is being set at odds against each other, and unless they can find a way to unify themselves then they’ll be plummeted into war.

Well, Naruto (obviously a Sky Flame type) is not going to stand for this. He’s going to become Hokage!

In this world, Hokage is less about being a leader over the clans so much as it is being the Champion of a certain cause. So the Sandaime was Hokage in order to sway the yakuza in one way or another during maybe WWII (I’m unsure how it was in Japan, but I remember learning that the mafia in real life were against fascism and actually helped the Allies against Mussolini, so maybe I can say it’s the same in this weird magical KHR world… but I don’t really want to get into that here). Tsunade’s cause during the Godaime was most likely something to do about the medical field. Have no idea what Minato’s cause was, but his tenure as Yondaime was very short and probably only happened so quickly because the matter was very urgent (and regardless, the Uzumaki clan still ended up destroyed, but at least everyone else is fine. I guess)

But I digress.

The clans are beholden to the Hokage, not out of any sense of duty, but out of choice–because in order for someone to become Hokage every single clan has to acknowledge the person as a worthy person to follow. EVERY SINGLE CLAN.

Well, that shouldn’t be too hard, right?

Naruto, as the last Uzumaki, has been fostered with the Sarutobi clan for most of his life, so that’s easy. The Akimichi, Nara, Yamanaka, Aburame, Inuzuka, Hatake, and Senju don’t really take that much convincing either given… well… they don’t want to go to war either. Peace is prosperous for most of the families, and Naruto is a good kid. The Hyuuga have always been the holdouts for Hokage votes, so that’s no surprise there. And obviously there’s going to be some overarching will he won’t he thing with Sasuke committing his clan to a cause that Naruto of all people is leading. But, you know, eventually that happens.

And then that’s when Danzo’s machinations are revealed and there’s no way that the person behind all the war-mongering is going to agree to a Hokage championing peace.

And even if the rest of the clans unify against the Shimura clan, Naruto still can’t be Hokage due to laws put in place by the very first Hokage (which still holds all clans beholden). And even if they won’t fight each other–well Danzo can easily start a war with the Triads in China or, hey, he’s heard whispers that the Italian mafia are making incursions into Japan.

But then: TenTen saves the day!

And I’m not even mostly joking. Because poor orphan TenTen actually is a Shimura–more specifically, Danzo’s granddaughter via his disowned child who tried to start a civilian family but ended up killed (for unrelated reasons?) and TenTen somehow found her way back to the yakuza by being adopted by one of the Sarutobi family? I DUNNO.

So she essentially steals the Shimura clan away from Danzo–or at least the Shimura vote for Hokage, which leads to Naruto becoming Hokage and deciding the best way for peace is to get rid of Danzo which would make TenTen head of the Shimura clan anyway…

And then at the end, the KHR characters make a cameo, meet Hokage Naruto and his twelve guardians, and probably strike up an international alliance. Or something.

Anyway, for clarity, here are the clans:

Aburame – Shino
Akimichi – Chouji
Hatake – Lee (via being Gai’s protege)
Hyuuga – Hinata and Neji
Inuzuka – Kiba
Nara – Shikamaru (and Shikako, if this is a DoS version)
Sarutobi – Naruto (via fostering) and TenTen (via adoption/fostering)
Senju – (Sakura, via subordinate family)
Shimura – TenTen (and Sai, via Danzo is a creeper)
Uchiha – Sasuke
Uzumaki – Naruto
Yamanaka – Ino

Now as for Flame types well… since there are twelve guardians (plus or minus Shikako and Sai depending on if we’re doing DoS version or a canon version) I thought it would be cool if there are two of each Flame type (minus, of course, Naruto’s sky type):

Storm: Kiba and Lee (if DoS version) or Ino (if canon version)
Sun: Sakura and Chouji
Lightning: Shikamaru and Shikako (if DoS version) or Lee (if canon version)
Rain: Hinata and Neji
Mist: Sasuke and Ino (if DoS version) or Sai (if canon version)
Cloud: Shino and TenTen

edit: Ugh, you know what? I’m not too keen on these Flame type assignments… so I’m going to redo them. Given my headcanon that biologically female characters in the KHR universe tend to have a blend of multiple Flame types (which is why there are generally so few female Guardians who are restricted to a specific Flame type) the kunoichi will also have multiple Flame types though will have a predominant one for simplification sake.

Shino – Cloud
Chouji – Sun
Lee – … should he even have Flames? To mirror his canon storyline
Hinata – Lightning, Sun
Neji – Lightning
Kiba – Storm
Shikako – Rain, Storm
Shikamaru – Rain
Sakura – Sun, Storm
TenTen – Cloud, Lightning
Sai – Mist
Sasuke – Mist
Ino – Mist, Rain

Which by type is:
Storm: Kiba, Shikako (secondary), Sakura (secondary)
Sun: Chouji, Sakura (primary), Hinata (secondary)
Lightning: Neji, Hinata (primary), TenTen (secondary)
Rain: Shikamaru, Shikako (primary), Ino (secondary)
Mist: Sasuke, Sai, Ino (primary)
Cloud: Shino, TenTen (primary)

So there’s not too much overlap of types and such and it fits better with personalities/clan abilities rather than I don’t even know what I was going with before…

If anyone wants to adopt this idea I would totally be up for beta and brainstorming, just that I personally don’t think I want to tackle this fic.

I agree with your assessment of EAH. There are to many overlapping characters for both franchise to inhabit one world. What I was thinking of was a mis-cast spell resulting in a world swap of the various main characters. The fic being the journey back to their world (if they want to go back), and maybe learning to be better for the journey. I’d be interested in Chad meeting the Charming siblings of EAH. I think all three of them would give him an earful. Cinderella’s Daughter too.

2/2 Also, it is my personal opinion Evie would have an amazing time with the fashion in EAH. but that’s more of a fun aside compared to a story plot.

I’m glad you enjoyed my little brainstorm šŸ™‚

Chad definitely needs to get chewed out by the EAH Charming siblings and Cinderella’s daughterĀ (they certainly do not approve of his ways)–although I think at first they would be bewildered by having an alternate universe half-sibling. And theeeeen go after him for his philandering ways. I also agree that Evie ending up in the EAH universe would be interesting–especially considering herĀ ā€œdoubleā€ is one of the main characters with Snow White’s daughter being the other.

Descendants didn’t really explore the background myths beyond the strict villain vs hero categorization which I find a bit of a shame–yes Mal and Audrey had some conflict, but Evie and Snow White never even meet, there is no mention of Jasmine and Aladdin’s child or even the Radcliffes. And yes, I understand that it’s because the movie is primarily Mal’s story–and it’s meant to, at most, be a springboard for Mal to become her own person outside of her mother’s past crimes. But I do enjoy the mythos of the original fairytales, how to interweave multiple stories into a single tapestry. I like how EAH acknowledges the past and the characters actively keep that in mind–an almost literal, remember the past so as (not) to repeat history.

As I said before I don’t know all that much about EAH so I wouldn’t be able to juggle such a fic as the one you described, but it does sound like a fascinating read and I’d love to help you with brainstorming if you want to have a go at it šŸ™‚

Have you heard of the series Ever After High? when Descendants came out, a few people I know were comparing them to each other. I admit I’m shocked that no one has tried to cross/fuse the two Universes. I admit a (slight) preference to EAH (mostly because it has more for me to fangirl over) and with it’s newest movie hitting Netflix this weekend I was wondering what you thought of it, and it with Descendants.

I… have not, anon–let me take a quick look at the wiki page…

Okay, so, keep in mind that all I know about EAH is from the wiki page, I do find it interesting. I definitely see the parallels between EAH and Descendants which would make a fusion (that is, as I use the term, characters of one world transplanted into the other) very straightforward. A crossover (that is, both fandoms are the same world) would be almost… impossible? Just because there are so many overlaps… but I guess if you specifically pick and choose certain characters. Like some of the EAH characters fill in the blanks of Auradon Prep. But… :/ that’s not really fair, is it?

What I find most fascinating is the differing philosophies of Descendants vs EAH. Because in the former all the kids either take for granted or strive to end up like their parents–it’s villain kids versus hero kids all the way through. Whereas in the latter it’s ā€œRoyalsā€ vs ā€œRebelsā€ aka those who want to have the same destiny as their parents and those who want to make their own path. And it’s not all heroes on one side and villains on the other–although the leaders of both are as would be expected.

The strangest thing to me in EAH is that ā€œaccording to Headmaster Milton Grimm, if the students don’t follow their individual destinies, their stories will cease to exist and they will disappear forever,ā€ which just screams magical curse to me. Obviously I’d have to watch EAH to see how they explore that, but to me that’s what a fusion would revolve around.

Because it’s a magical curse that is very biased towards the heroes–I mean, a lack of free will sucks for everyone, but at least the heroes’ destinies are on paper ā€œHappily Ever After.ā€ So right off the bat there’s this discord and hypocrisy that adds depth to everyone’s motivation and behavior.

Take Mal for example–she would most likely want to break the destiny curse. At first, it’s because she wants evil to triumph over good. Though, arguably, breaking a curse goes against the whole being evil thing. But then, probably, she eventually realizes that she just doesn’t want to be evil. In contrast, Ben is against the destiny curse purely on principle (… or is he? Is his destiny, as was his parents’, in actuality to break a curse?).

Whereas then you have Evie who doesn’t completely mind her fate–since that means she will be a queen like her mother, and honestly might be a little evil at heart–but doesn’t want to end up defeated. Or Audrey who would prefer not to be placed under a sleeping spell, but does want her happy ending. And then there’s Chad whose womanizing is him taking for granted the fact that he’ll eventually find his one true love and settle down. Or Jane who is actively hoping to follow her mother’s footsteps because that means she’ll have magic.

I suppose the fic would then revolve around the mystery of the destiny curse–who cast it, how to undo it, if such a thing is even possible, etc. I doubt I’d actually write this particular fic, anon, given that I know so little about the EAH world, but it was an interesting train of thought to follow. So thanks!
