My father and I are much alike. From the outside, people say it as a compliment–he’s a respectable man, I should be honored–but it’s not always a good thing.

We emote silently, or at the very least non-verbally. Regretting silently is a show of submission; grieving in the same manner, a show of strength. Restraining words in anger prevents others from getting hurt; and a smile always more honest than flattery.

But it’s a dangerous thing–it makes words spoken in the midst of emotional turmoil, all the more potent. They are concentrated, crystallized feelings in verbal form; mused over in a specific head state, turned this way and that at different angles to sharpen them into knives. Or worse, when there is such a tidal wave of emotions that it breaks through your self control, bursts out rapid fire like spray of bullets.

Taciturn and solemn and stoic, they are admirable descriptions until you deal with them personally.

We are takers, not givers. It’s an unreliable binary, steeped in bias, but not entirely false. Givers are not always generous out of altruism, and takers not always selfish, endless consumers. But there is an implicit assumption to givers and takers, they always assume others are like them.

With my mother, when she gives she expects others to give back. It’s not necessarily that she wants something in particular, but she wants reciprocity, she wants a counter offer. It’s uncomfortable, a heavy weight that presses down. It’s less an I owe you and more a you owe me; a favor for a favor, whether you want it or not.

But with my father and I, we are conscientious takers. We take only what we need because taking more tips the balance, taking more means less in the future… and someone is at the other’s mercy. We are calculating and scrupulous, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re heartless.

We have hearts, they’re just rather on the cold side.

A/N: A little late, but I think it’s still good. Also veeeery vaguely autobiographical.

Externality drabble (2015-03-02)

Except for the international Chuunin Exams, which is more of a pageant than a test, promotions are done differently in each village. In Konoha, it’s at the discretion of the certain key individuals–the Hokage, rank commanders and captains, and heads of departments. Of course, field promotions can be done by anyone of superior rank, but those always have to be justified later on to stick.

Konoha, in a position of power and a great many resources, has the luxury of adding a little… pageantry to their own promotions. Even the ANBU are not above their own little ceremonies, though theirs involve a little more cloak and dagger–literally. It’s not such a surprise that different departments have unique methods of internal promotions. The laziest–or they would argue, the most efficient–department is Torture & Interrogation.

To be fair, they’re already in charge of putting on the spectacle that is the international Chuunin Exam. That on top of their actual job of maintaining Konoha’s information network– via espionage, counter-espionage, and good old-fashion data collection–is a lot of work. They don’t have the time or resources to plan parties and initiations… but they are rather fond of mind games and it’s a good opportunity.

Just like how there’s an increase in skill between genin and chuunin, the difference between chuunin and tokubetsu jounin is distinct. It’s why the Chuunin Exams are unofficially and secretly considered to be the Tokubetsu Jounin Trial.

It’s how Morino Ibiki and Mitarashi Anko got their rank. It’s how she’ll be promoted, too. Well, it’s a littler more complicated than that.

A/N: I did want to continue, buuuuuut deadline. So, here’s a little preview, I may go back to it eventually. The context is particularly headache inducing, so I won’t get into it here. If you want to wade through it, you can check it out at my livejournal here. It should be under Externality.

(In)Difference drabble (2015-03-01) [2]

When it comes to our clan’s heritage, there’s a disparity in what we tell people and what we keep to ourselves. Father claims we share ancestry with the Hyuuga (brags it more like). Superficially it passes muster–we share the same basic coloring of black hair, pale skin and eyes. But while our eyesight is sharp, it’s still within baseline human ability–we have nothing on the Hyuuga or even the Uchiha. It still helps with our archery techniques, though–which is yet another thing which sets us apart from our supposed cousins who use mostly close range taijutsu.

But our clan’s skills, like our keen eyes, straddle the line between the truth of our ancestry and the falsehood of our Hyuuga relations. While most people know of the Byakugan, there’s more to the Hyuuga blood limit than that. Jyuuken, their family taijutsu style, relies on the blocking of an opponent’s tenketsu. This is done by making one’s own chakra an almost solid plug–chakra is energy, it dissipates in most circumstances. Unless you are a Hyuuga. But our clan’s archery doesn’t need physical arrows because we make them out of our chakra. Just like the Hyuuga, Father attributes, in the rare occasions it comes up.

For the most part, when Father says we’re distantly related to the Hyuuga, everyone knows it’s a lie–which makes it harmless and a good cover that no one bothers to crack. In everything, Father tells the truth, unless a lie is necessary. Father is the clan head. The lie is necessary.

There is an art to teaching children of our clan’s true heritage. We are never told outrightly, not when the walls have ears, not in this political climate, but by the time we are of training age we know. Those born to our clan develop an extra sense, one which we are encouraged to keep quiet, to keep hidden. The sense isn’t flashy, as invisible as the magnetic fields it corresponds to. But sometimes we slip, children do not always know what is secret and what is normal.

We master cardinal directions as children before figuring out the idea of left and right. We claim that it makes communication more precise, that we are simply maintaining our family’s reputation as excellent navigators. Even as children we can always find our way Home, regardless of where in the village we are. Our clan buys property in the north part of Konoha for a reason.

It’s the arrows that gives it away to a close observer. They are made from chakra, yes, but not pure chakra like the Hyuuga use. This is our secret: our arrows are Lightning natured chakra wrapped in Wind natured chakra. The latter is not a secret, there is no harm in Wind affinity–the Sarutobi family occasionally has natural Wind affinity, and one of them is the Hokage.

It’s the former which we hide, careful and unspoken; we try not to bring much attention to ourselves and our techniques even less so. But when we do, when that attention is on us, we mimic what Father says: the Hyuuga, we’re just like them. And we fall back into obscurity soon enough–we are a minor clan trying to ride the coattails of a Noble clan, one of the oldest stories in the book. Boring, predictable, obvious.

Except for how it’s a lie.

~

A/N: Ugh, it’s all over the place. I’ll post this for now so it’s technically still 0301, but I think I’ll edit it a bit in the future so it flows better. Obviously Naruto fanfiction, probably in the (In)Difference ‘verse featuring Kiyoshi Utsugi.

But basically, the Utsugi family naturally has Lightning (and Wind) affinities which is heavily implied to be because they are from the Fire-Lightning border. And it’s greatly encouraged to keep it a secret due to the whole… anti Lightning country thing. Their Lightning affinity is so ingrained that they’re practically walking electromagnets.

If her life was a book, she would tell you to skip the beginning. It was repetitive and bland and didn’t have much of a plot. Her ending wouldn’t be such a good read either–though there were moments of suspense and terror, it featured mostly frustration, helplessness, and bitter resignation. And she’s pretty sure towards the end she wasn’t even a main character.

Then again, she could argue that most her life she wasn’t the main character. Even in the middle which would be her favorite. That part she’d reread if she could–relive if she could–filled as it was with excitement and laughter. There were times when it felt quotidian, tedious even, but it was tempered with contentment. There was frustration then, too, and drama, but the kind that could be resolved with hard work and communication. It was the middle of her life when she was satisfied. Such a shame that it ended so poorly.

A/N: … sigh, I really do want to play in this universe but it’s hard to articulate the stuff percolating in my brain. Related to this ramble of Kuwabara-Honinbou’s medium/onmyouji/exorcist granddaughter. I kind of wanted to imply that she died because of Kira from Death Note (which I headcanon is in the same universe but just a few years after the events of Hikaru no Go) because she could see the ghosts of all these criminals and basically, she knew too much without having the genius to back it up. Still don’t know what I want to name her, though. Leaning towards Haru so there’s the default assumption of Spring (春) when in fact it’s Ash Night (灰夜) which is rather morbid. Basically, she’s tagged for death from beginning to end.

And of course my author’s notes are practically longer than the actual drabble. Of course. But I suppose it’s good foundation for if/when I do come back to this universe.

(edit: I now realize that Haru really would be a good name, because if she just verbally introduces herself to Light then he’d write down her name with the wrong kanji and it wouldn’t work. Of course, she’s screwed as soon as Misa enters the scene with her Shinigami Eyes, but by that point there’ll be some other plot reason to keep her alive)

Edit2: Now called (En)Closure

Imagine a boy. His world is ending because his Momma is in a hospital room and the doctors say she can’t come back home. This boy is just old enough to decipher what that really means. Death is something that can happen to people, not just unfortunate houseplants and goldfish.  Not anymore.

So while this boy loves his Momma, knows that her time is limited, he leaves the room. Because he is scared, and a part of him–a slowly dwindling part, a part which he is beginning to outgrow–still thinks that if he doesn’t see it, it won’t be true.

He finds his way into another hospital room–this one much fancier than his Momma’s. It only has one bed, only one person, and it has wide windows to let in sunlight. But it’s not as nice, the boy thinks, because there aren’t any flowers or handmade cards or balloons. It’s a very empty room, even though it’s occupied.

So the boy clambers into the chair next to the bed, because he is still young and he is still quite small, to look at the sleeping man in the bed. Later on, the boy will learn the difference between sleeping and a coma, but unconsciousness looks the same to him.

The sleeping man’s face is not very nice looking–even without the scars crossing across half of it, the sleeping man has slanted eyebrows and a sharp nose. He’s all angles and edges, like blades and icicles and sharp dry wit.

But the boy is scared and lonely and naturally a bit of a chatterbox, so he talks. And talks. And keeps on talking. The sleeping man is sleeping–in a coma, same thing–so he can’t tell the boy to shut up. But even if he could he wouldn’t, because it’s the first voice he’s heard in years.

A/N: Ahahahaha… well… uh, I admit that this was written with certain characters in mind… by which I mean technically this may be Teen Wolf fanfiction, more specifically pre-slash StilesxPeter (which I don’t even really ship?) But I’m not sure if such an AU exists and I was kind of interested in the idea. Basically, it was meant to be something like canon AU where Peter is like… Stiles’ sociopathic fairy godfather via Stiles regularly chattering at a comatose werewolf.

However, you could ignore all of that context and enjoy it in an entirely platonic, non-fanfiction way.

That’s the kid.

The one with the bleached hair? Ah, I see what you mean… Yeah, you were right. This is my kind of job.

Of course I’m right. Who do you think you got your skills from?

Well, you may be my grandfather but I’m a lot better at this than you are. Otherwise you wouldn’t be asking for my help, you decrepit old monkey.

Such disrespect! Ha! Just how I taught you.

Of course. But seriously–I’m not charging you for this, however if I do take this job you have to follow all the rules I give my clients, grandfather or not.

Rules? Can’t be too difficult.

It really isn’t, or shouldn’t be, but you’d be surprised at how poorly my clientele follow directions. I hope you won’t be added to that.

Lay it on me.

First, you have to listen to what I say. If I tell you to hold your breath, you do not breathe. If I tell you to destroy something, you break it and set the pieces on fire. If I tell you to–

Yeah, I get it.

Second, you need to stick to your goals. Once you set those goals you can’t turn back, I will be working to meet them so no regrets and no changing them mid-job.

Ah, that I may need help with.

I can help you create a list of what the possible results and situations may be, but you have to be the one to get your priorities in order.

Okay.

And third, the living get to live. The dead are here at my leisure. If there’s any sign that that kid is being possessed against his will or if it’s hurting him, then I’m performing an exorcism regardless of if that ghost is some kind of once in a lifetime genius. He already had his lifetime, he doesn’t get to steal another from someone else. Got it?

Yeah. I’d exorcise him myself if it were like that.

Please, you don’t have the juice to exorcise a goldfish much less a centuries old ghost. You weren’t even sure if there was a ghost involved. Eyesight going already? How will you play your board game?

Little brat, a real player doesn’t need to see the board to win.

Hm… Speaking of, set up a game with the kid. I need to get a closer read on both of them; don’t want to approach them cold. Can you do that?

Are you joking? I’m Kuwabara-Honinbou, if an insei won’t agree to play a game with me I might as well hand over my title to that upstart Ogata.

~

A/N: Uh… yeah. I guess I’m on a bit of an OC fanfic spree. So this is for currently unnamed granddaughter of Kuwabara-Honinbou who works as a medium. Which means she can actually see Sai–it’s highly implied that Kuwabara stopped and stared at Hikaru because he was able to sense Sai but the fact that he didn’t bring it up means that maybe he can’t see it so well?

She then figures out the dealio with Sai and Hikaru, but is mostly a spectator for their hilarious identity shenanigans. She only really steps in to prevent Sai from fading, and can be talked into providing an alibi for Hikaru by acting as Sai’s hands in NetGo in exchange for doing embarrassing favors.

She emphatically does not play Go. But people are really confused as to why Kuwabara’s granddaughter is hanging around an insei so at first they think she’s Sai but then they think Hikaru’s going to be Kuwabara’s apprentice…

[edit: sort of continued here. Also, now tentatively naming her Haru – Ash Night (灰夜), not Spring (春)]

Team Medic brainstorm, part 2 / 2 (2015-02-26)

[continued from here. Again, context, strange AU of Dreaming of Sunshine by Silver Queen in which “Team One” of Youbirin Suzu/Nohara, Jiro Watanabe, and Sakura Haruno actually pass. kuipernebula in bold, me in italicized]

With Jiro being from Lightning country (or descended from Lightning natives), putting him on Team Eight with Hinata who had been kidnapped by Kumo ninja would be so interesting. And then having Youbirin on Team Ten would force him to confront three clan heirs who not only accept, but thrive in their clan’s expectations.

Yes, these are both good and make sense. But to play devil’s advocate: Jiro feels like he needs to prove his loyalty, it’s something he craves and wants because of who his family is. This could be juxtaposed nicely with Team Ten, who are the most fiercely loyal team, coming from a long tradition of loyalty- to each other, to their clans, to eachother’s clans, to the village… Youbirin, by contrast, has common ground with Hinata in terms of pressures from the clan.

That said, I actually prefer your suggestions better, since it maximizes drama and, therefore, interest. There’d have to be some in-universe justification, though; Sakura to Team Seven could be because she’s exceptionally talented as a medical-nin (perhaps partly thanks to the “inner sakura” compartmentalization thing) while it’d make sense to add the most strongly tied to a clan to the Ino-Shika-Cho trio. I’m not sure if it’s fair to Jiro or Team Eight to have him default there, but…

Hm… in-universe justification could be… Team Eight is a tracking specialist team, Team Ten either bodyguarding or retrieval/infiltration, Team Seven an all-rounder or high offense. Then you just need to make sure that you can justify each medic’s sub-specialty to the Team.

Sakura’s “inner Sakura”/compartmentalization ability would make her good for Team Seven because if they are a high offense/attack squad she can’t expect someone to be able to protect her–she has to be able to hold her own as well as be a healer. Whereas Youbirin who only knows medical jutsu and not much attacking would have to be bodyguarded while he’s healing and if he does supplement his skills with genjutsu or sealing then he’s even more of a support/long-range nin. Team Ten, or rather, the Ino-Shika-Cho configuration already accounts for the Ino being out of commission while doing the Yamanaka mind jump thing so adding Youbirin wouldn’t be too much difficulty.

Again, it does seem like Jiro is the default but I’m not entirely sure what direction you want to go in for him. If his Lightning Nature allows him to augment his nervous system/senses he would be a good addition to a sensing/tracking team. In addition, that Lightning Nature can also be used offensively which the rest of Team Eight’s clan abilities do as well–Hyuuga’s are known for Byakugan and Gentle Fist, Inuzuka’s canine aspects don’t just augment sense of smell but battle abilities, Aburame insects can be a tiny spy network or a way to drain opponents.

So to justify which medic goes to which team: Team Seven’s medic has to be able to attack as much as heal and hold their own. Team Eight’s medic has to be able to keep up and protect themselves. Team Ten’s medic doesn’t necessarily need to be a high offense, but they have to be adaptable in their support of the main team.

Perhaps Jiro has some slight tracking abilities with his lightning? Stuff like instant compasses, brainwave-sensing (neurons and all that), etc… He could also use brainwave sensing to be a living lie detector, if that route was chosen. I’d like to sideline the compartmentalization thing, though, if only because Sakura’s canon strength has always been her extremely accurate he has maximal chakra efficiency. And if there’s one thing Team 7 needs, it’s chakra efficiency. Youbirin, though…

… Well, Youbirin is going to get left behind no matter what, since he has to deal with being the fourth wheel- fifth, with asma- of Ino-Shika-Cho. Perhaps he was sent there to account for his own faults; he’s not good with team work, so the natural teamwork of that group would account for that weakness? Also, if he’s genjutsu-heavy, he can provide additional stalling power to the team; otherwise, a focus on taijutsu could help provide protection for the more stationary Shikamaru and Ino

Yeah, I see what you mean about the compartmentalization. But her chakra efficiency is a two sided blade as well–it makes her perfect for medic ninjutsu as well as point-blank super-strength.

Youbirin being left behind or the fifth wheel isn’t necessarily something that’s bad. It might actually be interesting to see someone in the Naruto verse who just… doesn’t want to be a ninja, much less a clan kid. Then again, I don’t think that’s the direction you want to go in. Him being the fifth wheel is kind of like what I imagine a traditional field medic is–like, they’re not actually trained to fight so it would be like they are constantly body-guarding him in exchange for his support skills.

I don’t think he’ll ever bond with any of the teams as much as Sakura would Team Seven or even Jiro has the potential to (a sort of, discovering that true loyalty is to individual people not just an idea or a country) with whichever team. He must just discover that he doesn’t want to be a battle/field medic–he’s on a team with an Akimichi who have unique food pills and the Nara and Yamanaka clans supply the raw materials/research into it. He may end up just wanting to be more of a pharmacist than a badass. Which, again, is not necessarily a bad thing. You could probably get some drama about him not wanting to let his sensei down after all the battle training.

If anything, though, you could use him to focus on the weird Obito/Kakashi/Rin backstory drama if you don’t want to get too narrowed down into reallocation. Maybe he was the closest to Kabuto-senpai and it’s like a Sasuke-Orochimaru with far less pedophilic undertones, so it’s a surprise to everyone that the clan kid turns out to be the traitor over the Lightning descendant or the tether-less civilian. How far would you want to go with this? If you end up writing, it could be interesting to start at the “end” in which a traitor Youbirin is finally tracked down and captured by Team Seven and he’s being interrogated by Jiro (due to living lie detector).

With Youbirin, though, it was mostly going to be a plot of “I don’t mind the job, but I don’t want to be forced into it” kind of deal. So he doesn’t actually mind being a field medic- in fact, he prefers it over being a normal medic, since that’s most of the clan.

Although… It would be interesting to see the Youbirin/Kabuto mentorship thing, particularly since it’d change a lot, and it’d be particularly alarming to Shikako, who might blame herself for it. (Youbirin’s being anywhere close to Kabuto being directly caused by his passing with Sakura’s team, which was itself due to Shikako’s presence.) In fact, it might be really interesting if he is the only Team One medic who doesn’t bond with his team; could also lead to some Team Ten self-blaming drama.

Ooh, that would be good, though. Shikako may not like him, but they’re practically teammate-in-laws and Kabuto is evil, she probably should have remembered that he was a medic nin and Team medic would be at risk of interacting with him. Also remember that Youbirin was the instigator for a lot of bullying towards Chouji in particular.

If Youbirin does get mentored by Kabuto, I kinda would prefer if he was manipulated/used rather than straight-up converted; I mean, I don’t think he’s a total jerk, just a little bitter. Plus DRAMA.

I’m not too keen on Youbirin going full bad either, it was just an idea I was throwing around. I guess it depends on what your endgame is for Team Medic as a whole and Konoha Twelve/Fifteen.

While Youbirin falling behind everyone else because he was shoehorned into a role he didn’t necessarily want is interesting and does give a lot to work with, at some point we have to reverse it. Even canon Sakura was fangirl being left behind by Naruto and Sasuke before then becoming Tsunade’s apprentice and basically Tsunade 2.0. With Jiro you have not many people trusting him, or him thinking no one trusts him due to his heritage, but ultimately he becomes the loyal immigrant when he does make friends with people and connects loyalty with individuals. So with Youbirin, I suppose it would be…

He peaked at the Academy–that was when he was the big fish in a little pond–but suddenly he’s a little fish in a big pond and he’s not growing anywhere near as fast as the other genin. Which especially stings considering his teammates are a civilian-born and a (second-generation?) immigrant and he was practically bred for being a medic ninja. So that does explain why he’s the one that goes to Kabuto for mentorship, and ultimately gets manipulated then betrayed. He then has to pick himself back up somehow, and I think that’s what is so difficult with Youbirin in comparison to Sakura and Jiro: because he was once at a high then he sank as opposed to his teammates who started from nothing (or less than that) and their stories are just upwards growth. In a way, that makes his character development almost delayed in comparison to everyone else’s because as we are currently brainstorming him, we are pushing him backwards.

And while from Youbirin’s point of view it makes sense for him to get mentoring from Kabuto we would then have to justify it from Kabuto’s point of view. Like, why would he bother with a comparatively unskilled genin? Kabuto’s adopted dad is already head of the Hospital so it’s not like the Suzu/Nohara medical clan would have more political/social connections than that. Unless there is a Suzu/Nohara clan secret technique/ability which is valuable to Kabuto or Orochimaru. Or maybe it’s something that Team One’s jounin sensei has and Kabuto is using Youbirin to get it–either technique, item, information.

I don’t remember Kabuto’s motivations very well, so I can’t help much on that front. Maybe he wanted a plant near the Rookie 9(12?) because he knew they’d be important? After all, spies are always handy to have. (I mean, he is one, he should know…) Meanwhile, perhaps he finally gets the courage to confront his family and friends about the pressure he feels? And he just… quits being a ninja for a while? This kind of plot could work without the Kabuto/Evil thing, in a way that still creates tension with Team Ten, as they realize just how much they’ve alienated this person who’s entire job is to keep them alive. Or something. They all have big hearts, even if only Choji shows it; in fact, it’d probably break Choji’s heart to realize how alone the poor kid feels… And after Youbirin realizes that, yes, he WANTS to be a field medic (not a normal medic, but one the field, helping the way only he can) he starts getting even better, perhaps developing a new technique.

I’m not too sure about Kabuto’s motivation either, but it seems like the kind of thing that would have to be justified. Like, he has so much stuff on his plate what with being a spy for three different people and pretending to be an incompetent genin that any additional projects would have to be worth it. But that spy within the Rookies is a good idea–it could be that Kabuto even emphasized and played up on Youbirin’s insecurities such that he’d be more willing to trust Kabuto. Whereas the other Rookies are more staunchly loyal to Konoha/connected to Shikako/mistrustful of Kabuto, Youbirin is still somewhat innocent(? naive?) in comparison to Jiro and Sakura who have been through bullying/discrimination… mostly because he’s usually on the other side, but that means he has no defense against Kabuto’s manipulations.
I guess it depends on the timing of things–I just assumed any major changes would have to be after the Chuunin Exams. But if you have Sakura and Jiro improving right off the bat, then you can already start Youbirin’s inadequacy issues right after graduation. (Like, maybe they catch on to jounin sensei’s lessons faster, or they’re already beginning to innovate and invent their own techniques, whereas Youbirin is mostly relying on all the clan training he received just to keep up).

Then you can throw in a C-rank adventure of some sort which stands in place of canon Wave arc. Some kind of major event which shakes up the dynamic, makes it very obvious that Youbirin is falling behind, which makes him doubt if he even wants to be a ninja. Then when he’s at his most vulnerable, Kabuto sidles in and casually tosses out an offer to mentor him. Youbirin improves for a while, up until the betrayal of the Sand Sound invasion (and Kabuto’s role in it) is revealed… or maybe… I don’t think it’s actually stated whether or not Kabuto was a known traitor or just went missing… hm…

I think a C-rank mission is required; IIRC, a team needs to have participated in at least seven missions, with at least one above D-rank, in order to take the Chuunin exams. I just imagined that their missions would be necessarily somewhat focused on medical training in the field; in fact, their Jounin was likely there for the express purpose of training a squad to become combat medics, otherwise the “distribute the medics” plan can’t happen. And it’s one of the best parts of this AU, so…

Otherwise, it’s possible that Youbirin was how Kabuto obtained his information on the other members of the Rookie 12, something that wasn’t really elaborated on otherwise; Shikako mentioned that he shouldn’t have that information, but I don’t think it’s ever gone into detail, even in canon. All this said, I think there should be some elaboration on what the Suzu clan techniques actually are. Does Rin do anything particularly worthy of being either a Kekkei Genkai or a Hiden technique?

Youbirin being able to know all of that would imply a level of interaction with the other genin which kind of conflicts with the whole he’s being shunted to the side trend which would push him to being Kabuto’s spy in the first place.

As for Rin and the Suzu/Nohara clan, she was ridiculously good at being a medic (eye transplant surgery at around 13 years old?) but I don’t know if it was a specific technique. It may just be that their clan just indoctrinates their kids in medical knowledge. According to Naruto wiki, she’s one of very few people to have more than one chakra natures (she’s Fire and Water) but seeing as how she doesn’t actually do anything with it… And also it might upstage Jiro’s own Lightning nature plot point.

Good point. But I can’t imagine what else he could possibly be telling Kabuto. After all, Kabuto would be expecting something back from this kid in order to put up with him… But just being a generic medical clan makes sense; he relies on clan training, and it comes back to bite him when he realizes that the others are learning beyond that while he’s still relying on his (higher) base knowledge. Then he starts supplementing it with combat knowledge, giving him more options, like Shikako.

When it comes to specific points, I imagine at least most of their D-rank missions are volunteering at the hospital in some way. Not sure about the C-rank; it probably involves transporting medicine from inside the village, but I’m not sure if I want it to get exciting (and thus encourage Youbirin’s personal questioning) or if it’s more subdued (because Team Seven’s the trouble magnet; then again, Sakura was originally Team Seven, so it could rub off…) I guess it depends mostly on story pacing.

[But wait, there’s more here]

Team Medic brainstorm, part 1 / 2 (2015-02-25)

[ A/N: After midnight, yes, but not my fault! Also, not actually a drabble or a ramble, and usually I like to keep my stream of consciousness nonsense on my lj and have only clean stuff here. But as proof that I wasn’t just slacking off I decided to post it here. And because it was a conversation with kuipernebula through tumblr messaging.

MORE CONTEXT. It’s regarding Dreaming of Sunshine, an SIOC Naruto fanfiction whose tumblr blog I run (find it here), and the rather minor incident of Haruno Sakura (having been displaced from Team Seven by said SIOC) being on a “Team One” with Suzu/Nohara Youbirin/Suzu (this was before we got Nohara Rin’s last name, he’s supposed to be her nephew or at least from her clan) and Watanabe Jiro. They were failed, because minor characters, but there was a throw away line on how they actually might have passed if they had a medic jounin sensei. So kuipernebula and I started brainstorming and below is literally word for word what we messaged each other. kuipernebula is bolded, mine is italicized. Enjoy!]

I’ve only just started DoS, but I’m really curious what an AU would be like where Team Medic got a Medical Nin and passed as a team. What do you think such an AU would look like, both in terms of long-term ripple effects and “short-term” for Part I?

Hm… the major issue is that DoS is entirely from Shikako’s point of view, we don’t get to see what she doesn’t or what she isn’t told directly. However, Shikako is best friends with Sakura and Ino and consciously goes out of her way to interact with them even after graduation (even if it’s not as frequently as she would like). From Shikako’s point of view, I imagine that not much changes overall. The changes made in the universe are still based around her—including the creation of Team Medic (since Sakura would have been on Team Seven were it not for Shikako’s existence)—and being genin means that Team Medic wouldn’t be doing terribly exciting stuff. At least, nowhere near as exciting as Team Seven since they have the karma of canon Team Seven.

Actually, I feel like Team Medic would have less opportunities to have crazy adventures since I imagine their Medic jounin sensei wouldn’t want to waste their time on D-rank chores when there’s so much medical knowledge to cram into their students’ heads.

I was thinking more long-term; they’re another genin team, but also one with gifted medical-nin. And it does mean that later on there are three more trained ninjas that would be added later on. Even if mostly as support, it’s support that wouldn’t have existed otherwise. (Also, it could have created a “genin 12” situation against all odds, which would’ve been neat to see play out)

There is Team Gai, for the “Konoha Twelve,” but I totally get what you mean.
I think, though, the fact that Team One is specifically a Medic team means that they’ll be used in very specific situations only. OR they are trained to be THE medics on different chuunin squads, once they get promoted of course. In DoS world-building, battle medics are incredibly rare, field medics less so, and in-village medics are somewhat common (Konoha being a medical hub for the Naruto world due to Tsunade). If Team One does have a medic jounin sensei, that jounin would have to be a battle medic in order to be good enough to be promoted to jounin and you know they wouldn’t accept anything less from their students.

You then have to consider what each of their sub-specialties would be. For example, Tsunade has her super-strength from pinpoint accurate chakra control, Shizune has senbon+poison, Kabuto has chakra scalpels and regeneration (or at least before he became a crazy megalomaniac). Maybe Jiro has the ability to transfer wounds from ally to enemy by storing it within himself temporarily, maybe inner Sakura allows her to multi-task and compartmentalize to the point where she can heal with one hand and attack with another, maybe Youbirin is the only “regular” medic despite being the one from a medic clan so he tries to supplement his skills with seals or genjutsu. You can pretty much do anything so long as you can justify it.

I think in a short term (that is, while they are still genin or, at the very least, before the Chuunin Exams/Sand-Sound Invasion) an additional genin team of medic specialists won’t mean much. Maybe you’ll get some interesting scenes–for example Kabuto (pretending to be a genin) is ridiculously good at medic jutsu and Team One are confused as to why their senpai keeps pretending to be so pathetic; or since Youbirin is supposed to be Rin’s nephew there’ll be awkward Kakashi interaction (and by extension Team One/Team Seven interaction); or the jounin sensei gives them an assignment to learn/study the anatomical quirks of their fellow rookie genin (because most of them are representative of the more common clans of Konoha and a point I will make in a later paragraph**) and they see that Naruto has literally never needed to go to the hospital or get shots or whatever and they unravel the mystery to get Kyuubi jinchuuriki [although that’s a bit of a stretch]. However, over all, a team of genin isn’t really going to change much. Even in DoS, Shikako who actually knows shit is going to go down, can’t change very much intentionally.

I think it’d be only after the Chuunin Exams/Sand-Sound Invasion that you’ll have the freedom to make larger changes. Kabuto is outed as a traitor (or at the very least is missing/assumed dead), you maybe can kill of the medic jounin sensei and so the genin of Team One are either reabsorbed into the Medic Corps (which they are so far ahead of) or are assigned a new jounin sensei or maybe even (again, if you can justify it) distributed amongst the other rookie nine teams such that Team Seven, Eight, and Ten now have an additional medic teammate [** I think that the only reason a team of medics would be specifically trained by a jounin medic is with breaking them up and distributing them amongst the high-politic/dangerous/skilled clan heir teams. In canon, Tsunade in her youth had been advocating for a medic nin on every team, but for the most part it didn’t happen–maybe because it’s impractical, maybe because it’s too difficult to train that many battle/field-ready medic nin, maybe because the political climate was more towards war and offensive skills than healing. However, considering that all of the clan heirs, or at least very important clan children are all on the same team, more effort would be put into ensuring they are alive.] Or, more simply, one or two or all of them are promoted to chuunin

From there you really can do anything.

I do like the idea of Team Medic getting distributed among the others, though; It’d re-establish Sakura with Team Seven, which would by itself be kind of cool. I like to think that Youbirin’s jerk tendencies are him expressing his bitterness at feeling pressured into being a medical nin; he doesn’t really mind it by itself, but he wants to have a choice. Jiro I have other ideas for…

Yeah, I’d put Sakura with Team Seven again as well. It just seems weird to put her with either of the other two, and it would serve as a marker for her personal growth–not just a Sasuke fangirl anymore, she takes her duty seriously because they’re not just her teammates, they’re her future patients. Youbirin’s jerk tendencies could create interesting conflicts with either Ino or Kiba, being loud themselves, or his inner anxiety at being forced into his role by his clan could give him something to bond over with Hinata. (And depending on if you do have him be the “normal” medic who wants to supplement his knowledge with seals, it could create a stealth partnership/coup to get rid of the Caged Bird seal).

Jiro is literally a blank slate that you can play with–you can have him be related to some canon character, you can give him whatever abilities, his personality of being Youbirin’s best friend/hanger on could be because he’s a follower more than a leader, or he’s a shrewd person who knows to stick with the top dog, or he’s intimidated by clan kids but still kind of wants that connection. Maybe his parents are civilians, maybe they’re career chuunin, maybe they’re dead and he lives with his grandparents, is he an orphan? Any of that could be it…

… most of which might have no standing in canon due to my lack of knowledge, but generally the idea is that his family are actually immigrants from Kumogakure. Partially so that he has a darker skin tone for design aesthetic reasons, but also partially so that he feels an extra sense of having to prove his loyalty to Konohagakure. (Also, he could have Lightning affinity, which would be cool.)

Also, with a Lightning affinity you could incorporate some of our world medical techniques/knowledge. Like defibrillators! Or the fact that neurons function through electrical impulses… I don’t know how “advanced” Naruto world science is, so there’s a lot of things that Lightning affinity can mimic in the real world.

Untitled (2015-02-24)

You have a mole on your neck, a little above and to the side of your collar bone. Depending on what kind of top you wear it is either hidden from view, or demurely sits just above the neckline. It’s my favorite part of your body to kiss. I enjoy when our lips and tongues and teeth touch, and you know how eager I am to pleasure you with my mouth, but I must admit that I am fondest of that mole.

My lips crave soft skin, the jut of bone just beneath. But what I love most about kissing that mole is simply that you allow me to do so. Just me. I have seen you slap strangers for intruding on your personal space, less fortunate than I for not having your permission. I have seen you flip collars and wrap scarves to hide your neck from the world. I have seen you shudder in fear and mistrust from even the mere idea of someone touching your neck. But me, you allow the slightest touch of lips to skin. Just me.

And that, more than anything says that you love me as much as I love you.

A/N: ugh, I know, so short. Tbh, I have quite the headache so I was actually considering not doing this one either but considering how many missed posts I have… So, enjoy!
