Team Medic brainstorm (2016-04-14)

CHARACTER CREATION! šŸ˜€

Okay so jounin sensei: battle-medic who is loyal to Konoha…

They needn’t necessarily have been mentioned in canon provided, well… the scale of Konoha is much larger in DoS than it is in canon which is one of the very many reasons I prefer DoS to canon. Given that Masashi Kishimoto has such a narrow scope of the world, a single jounin–even if they are a medic–could easily be overlooked. Especially since we don’t really get a good look at any medic nin until Tsunade and Shizune appear–so, if we do go with the jounin sensei dying in the Sound Invasion, they would have likely also died during the canon Invasion as well and so would not be there when Tsunade and Shizune return. Also, frankly put, if the jounin sensei is female? Well… MK isn’t all that good about female representation.

And there is the fact that, as we brainstormed previously, their originally assigned jounin sensei actually passed them onto the battle medic who was on a sabbatical. So if she had been primarily doing research before being ambushed with a team of genin, then there’d be no reason for her to still mentioned in canon.

My guess is that she might have been, like Rin had, a field medic that was fast-tracked into becoming a combat medic during the Third Shinobi World War only she got to live through to peace time post-Kyuubi. I feel like a lot of that generation–had they survived–would be in a weird limbo? They were the youngest generation to be eligible for fighting during that war so they’re probably all either super strange and mildly traumatized.

So if you want to make that part of the jounin-sensei’s storyline–not exactly like Kakashi’s but a similar sort of coming out of her self-imposed isolation because she begins to care for these three kids–that could be one route. Like maybe the originally assigned jounin sensei was her genin teammate and is the only person she really interacts with outside of a professional capacity of the Medic Corps (a bit like Gai is to Kakashi). Which would make it super sad when/if she dies… Hm… we could come up with alternative story arcs. If this doesn’t appeal to you.

I’m also unsure if I actually want her to die? Maybe injured to the point of retirement from field work–so she can still be a medic and a researcher, but she can no longer be their team leader on the field which is why Team Medic is broken up amongst the other genin teams…

It would help if we had names…

Mostly a coloration change this time, but it’s a pretty substantial one.

The white/blue one is a simple change from his former shirt, but I added a change of pants as an option. Because the navy pants might mesh better with Sakura’s spandex shorts or something?

And then a huge recolor on bottom, because I thought adding the gray might set him apart from the other two while making the blue accents might call to lightning better or something? Plus, all of the Team 8 genin wear mainly gray, so it’s a call-forward to that whole deal. And a variant of that with the other color shorts.

I agree with @sweeterthanmydreams, it’s definitely a decision between top left and bottom right.

The reasoning for the bottom two is really neat (ā€œcall-forwardā€ is such a cool term!) but something about the top left is just super compelling to me. Maybe he goes through a wardrobe change after (possible) death of jounin-sensei and switching to Team 8? I mean it’s canon that everyone had a wardrobe change before Shippuden so…

Maybe top left is his pre-Shippuden and then bottom right is Shippuden since it has a more adult/Konoha chuunin feel to it.

Well I mean, most Shippuden changes were more drastic than just a color change, but I can see what I can do with that color scheme if/when I do Shippuden designs. (My problem is I don’t have any more adult-looking bases than these, so I’d probably have to actually draw them which would take longer. Doable, but longer.)

But yeah, that beige/blue/white combo is pretty nice. It’ll stay, at least for the moment. (I’ll see if/when I can make a Sakura to go with these guys, if only to finish Team Medic.)

And then comes the dreaded question: what does their jounin sensei look like? šŸ˜€

Try #4! Didn’t mess with Youbirin too much because his design is pretty much done, but I did mess with his bangs and bandanna a little bit.

Jiro’s jacket mk 2 more directly calls back to Kumonin chuunin jackets with the separating lines and straps and such. And the mesh shirt got longer for balancing(?) purposes. I also made his wrist-protector larger to be more believable. (Honestly though, if Kankuro can have his weird hood-hat as his forehead protector while still a genin, and Chouji can get his custom-made panty-shaped one as a genin, then them being available in different sizes isn’t thatĀ far-fetched.) It makes it a good place for if he needs to run chakra through it for a magnet; just slip it down to his palm and he’s good.

Ooh! Okay–I am liking the asymmetry on Jiro much better as a shirt with mesh sleeves than a long-sleeved jacket. šŸ˜€

I wonder (if it’s not too much trouble) what it would look like if the black were a different color? For either Youbirin or Jiro, I guess, because I realize having both of them wear black while Sakura doesn’t would make them look off as an entire team. Unless Sakura also gets some black in her outfit…?

@jacksgreysays

Try #3!

I changed Youbirin’s pants and Jiro’s hoodie as suggested, but I also moved their forehead protectors. Mostly because I realized they were both doubling up on styles of their future teams (Jiro and Hinata wearing theirs around their necks, Shikamaru and Youbirin wearing theirs on their arm) So Youbirin gets the Badana-style, and Jiro is unique with his wrist-watch substitute!

As for Jiro’s hoodie… The over-the-shoulder jackets of most Kumonin are actually their chuunin flak jackets, which doesn’t translate well for a Konoha genin. So instead I called back to the asymmetric style while keeping it subdued. I think it turned out well? Ish?

I also considering converting Youbirin’s belt into the forehead protector or finding another style for Jiro, but I think these work reasonably well.

Youbirin looks fantastic! I can’t think of anything I would change šŸ™‚

Jiro’s outfit is better than before but… I don’t know… it doesn’t seem as spot on as Youbirin’s does for him? Also, unsure how a wrist-band style protector would work? I don’t know how much the metal part of the protector can bend or if there are different sizes available–but I do really like the idea! Also, given his lightning abilities, I wonder if he doesn’t also use his forehead protector as a functional compass or magnet? That’d be way cool šŸ™‚

@jacksgreysays @bethisalive @dosbysilverqueen (i have no idea which blog to @ for this so I’m tagging all of them)

I updated my designs for Youbirin and Jiro, and came up with these radically different versions as a result. The kanji on Youbirin’s shirt is a poorly-drawn and slightly-obscured 医, which means medicine. (it’s pretty obvious i’ll admit, but i’ll remind you that the kanji Chouji wears on his shirt is literally just food.)

I’m a bit concerned that the orange/black combo on Jiro might edge too closely to Naruto? But the rest of his design might be unique enough to avoid that.

Just so we have the links: here’s the original designs andĀ here’s my answer to your ask.

Though, basically, it shakes out to: I reallyĀ like this redesign for Youbirin–it’s mostly dark and not showy except for the off-white vest which screams medic clan to me. He could probably rock shorter trousers or maybe the bandages roll up higher on his leg so it still feels like Naruto-world aesthetics.

I’m less fond of the orange for Jiro–though I do like the more feathered out hair and the mesh for him (the mesh works better on him than it did on Youbirin)–yes, because it’s awfully close to Naruto’s own outfit but also… hm…Ā

So I did a quick browse of all the named Kumo nin and their outfits and I’be noticed that they all have a lot of sashes crossing diagonally and some sort of asymmetrical top. And while Jiro is very much so about proving his loyalty to Konoha I like to think that he keeps some hold of heritage–finds a balance in his identity between his home and his culture–and it’s kind of. Like… he already looks like a Lightning Country native because of his skin and hair, it’s not like his clothes will fool anyone so maybe that’s the one concession he allows himself? Or maybe it’s his parents that want him to keep at least this much… So maybe green… or turquoise–since Youbirin no longer has blue–in an asymmetrical diagonal across his jacket?Ā

(Also realized that probably Jiro’s crush on Youbirin was because Youbirin defended him as a child from racist punks because to Youbirin, Jiro’s ability to play ninja was more important than what his skin color is)

Hmm… This could actually put Youbirin in an interesting position. He’s a clan kid, yes, so he’s better off than Sakura or Jiro. But he’s not from a clan that doesn’t actually have anything other than a fast-track through medical practices? Which would mean he’d have to find something – anything, really – to get him up to snuff with point-blank super strength and chain lightning. Maybe he could form a summoning contract later on, as a desperate attempt to stay relevant? Or something like that.

kuipernebula:

jacksgreysays:

Yes, that exactly! Like–Youbirin probably either explicit or implicitly lords his clan kid status above his teammates (oh, you don’t know how to do this already? when it’s something not taught in the Academy… a shortcut for starting campfires or something) and it’s this foundation that keeps him ahead of them…

At first.

And while Sakura doesn’t get her point-blank super strength until after Tsunade comes back (which means after the Chuunin Exam / Sound Invasion and thus after Youbirin loses his mentor) she does have perfect chakra control which canon!Sasuke got jealous of during the Wave arc. And while I’m unsure how soon you want Jiro to get his chain lightning, Youbirin basically grew up with Jiro as his minion–as his inferior–so any hint that Jiro might at all be better than him, no matter how insignificant would be grating.

So this inferiority complex is already the reason why he gets pushed towards Kabuto… if he does get the summoning contract I think it should be for a different reason. Like having realized his mentor was a traitor to Konoha and that he might have–even minimally, even unwittingly–added to that is what pushes him to temporarily take leave.

And so he retreats to his clan–some of whom are basically like, you can just go back into the Medic Corps where it’s safe, tons of Nohara are there, there is honor in this–some of them even bring up the last time a Nohara was a field/combat medic–Youbirin’s very namesake–and she died!

But maybe someone–the Nohara that has a summoning contract, maybe–is like. There is no shame in making a mistake, but not trying to correct that mistake? That is shameful. And maybe Youbirin brings up how even if he were to go back, he’s so behind, and that Nohara is like… if that is actually your concern and not just some excuse then you can sign this scroll. Insert-creature-here will decide if you are worthy.

… Yeah? Maybe? I don’t want to hijack the plot or anything…

That does work really well! (I’d recommend naming his mentor Takama Nohara, personally, if only because it’s theorized that’s the intended root of Rin’s name.) It does play with Youbirin’s biggest advantage/disadvantage, and it does so differently than any other canon clan kid!

Not sure what animal though… Based on the supposed root for the Nohara family name, it’d have to be something related to heaven or clouds, so perhaps a bird of some sort? Doves might be too western, but I think I read that Sasuke has hawks or something…? It’d also have to be something that, from a meta standpoint, is useful for Team 10′s bodyguarding/information-taking team mission. So a bird really is probably the best option for him, considering theĀ ā€œbird’s eye viewā€ would be helpful to them.

Actually, if we use birds, we could give him birds of paradise. Or it could be broadened to be corvids/crows, and then theĀ ā€œmasterā€ summon is a Bird-of-paradise, since they used to be considered part of the family corvidae. But that might be a bitĀ much…

Alternatively, something that can camouflage – like chameleons, although foxes and tanuki are known for being tricksters (but might be loaded symbolism with the tailed beasts, so might be out) – might be really good because it could set him up to get better at genjutsu, since it’s something that not as many of the konoha-nin actually use all that much of, as far as I know anyway.

And getting him into genjutsu would complete a ninjutsu-taijutsu-genjutsu triad with Jiro and Sakura, since Sakura’s main ability – point-blank super strength – is augmented taijutsu, while Jiro’s lightning affinity and his novel uses for it are ninjutsu.

But a chameleon may not be well-themed for the clan’s name and job… The only animal I can think of associated with medicine is snakes, which are rightĀ out. Bears also seem to have an association via Spirit Animal associations, but that won’t mean much to the Japanese-heavy world of Naruto.

I’m keeping all of that for posterity but I just realized that he literally hasĀ to have a crane like I am not joking it is the most symbolic animal in Japanese culture to not already have a place in Naruto lore, plus it’s a bird (see: point A about usefulness to Team 10) and it’s associated with longevity and eternal youth. Plus, there’s that story of 1,000 paper cranes, which can be fuel for some cool jutsu involving paper if we want to go that route.

Jiro’s chain lightning probably isn’t until pretty late. He certainly develops his defibrillator hands kinda early though, depending on if defibrillators even exist in the Naruto universe. (I think they do but I don’t remember.) I kinda want that to be his ā€œaha!ā€ moment, like he suddenly realizes he can actually succeed on his own merits. His compass-jutsu might also be early-ish, too – it’d help them survive the forest of death, in any case, and it’d be a settling factor for putting him on team 8 when team one splits. (I.e. his compass-jutsu, which likely points out more than just due north because chakra, makes him a useful tracker) But his brainwave/neuron stuff is all later.

And Sakura… honestly I’m not sure what changes in her development in Dreaming of Sunshine? But I feel like she’ll only get fast-tracked to Tsunade through the Team Medic process. Tsunade would probably be highly invested in this team dedicated to making battle-medics, and that would give her reason to notice Sakura early. The actual training won’t be until after the chuunin exams, but perhaps sooner than in canon? (I don’t know when it happens in canon because all of my knowledge of canon is centered on the chuunin exams and what I can find on the wiki)

On another topic: I know you just answered my ask about the redesigns, but I kind of posted them while I was waiting for your reply. So you can comment on my design choices if you wish. (I actually really like Jiro’s design better? But the orange might be too close to Naruto’s theme color. Youbirin is a toss-up, but I think I’m closer than I was with his earlier design.)

Oooh, yes, that is some fantastic Nohara clan headcanons! The only other possible summon I could think of was a swallow bird–but they’re not nearly as impressive as cranes would be. I’d probably avoid the paper/origami jutsu–simply because that’s edging too close into Konan territory, but maybe he develops a sealing technique which requires many tags?Ā Also, I like to imagine old man Takama Nohara has seen many things (he regrets not offering the summoning contract to Rin sooner).

Well, without spoiling anything, there are some changes in Sakura’s development in DoS–so having her become noticed by Tsunade because she is on a team of combat medics leading to an accelerated apprenticeship is totally within line. After the Chuunin Exam, of course, but it’s not as late as canon (which is, after the Sasuke Defection arc plus however long it takes Naruto to recover from a chidori through the chest).Ā Especially if their jounin sensei dies during the Sound Invasion (not sure whether or not I want that to actually happen). Or, maybe, if they were also in the Exam and made very impressive showings.

Oh and interesting aside: I’m in the process of redoing those Youbirin and Jiro designs I did a while back. At the moment I’m stuck on a color scheme for Youbirin; honestly I was never in love with Youbirin’s blue-and-purple, so I yanked the dark red from Rin’s socks and it’s… passable. Not great, but more subdued than before. Any ideas on good color schemes or other design influences? I have different hair for both of them that I like better, so it’s a start.

If you do dark red for Youbirin… is that not too close to Sakura’s pink and red ensemble? I mean theĀ ā€œcanon Youbirinā€ which Silver Queen based the characters on was admittedly dorky looking but if you want to salvage his turquoise and orange vibe? Or maybe not orange since that’s Naruto’s color… but turquoise? Or… hm… that’s still a little close to the blue, isn’t it?

I mean… what you could do is what’s the spirit behind Rin’s outift. It’s dark colors, mostly, except for the white skirt/apron thing. Well… maybe the apron thing is supposed to act as scrubs? Like how surgeons wear green to contrast with blood… Like the Nohara clan aren’t combat strong, they wear dark colors so they won’t be noticed in battle, but they’ll wear white if it makes them better healers even if that puts them at risk.

So maybe it’s be best to go with dark purple and blue for him, with a white something. Probably not a full on lab coat like with the Medic Corps uniform SQ made for Sakura in this pictureĀ but still something that shows the Nohara sensibility to be medics before combat shinobi.Ā

Hmm… This could actually put Youbirin in an interesting position. He’s a clan kid, yes, so he’s better off than Sakura or Jiro. But he’s not from a clan that doesn’t actually have anything other than a fast-track through medical practices? … Yeah? Maybe? I don’t want to hijack the plot or anything…

I’m not saying mutual per se, just that it’s where his attraction lies. (Partially because I had a huge crush on him even before I knew I was gay) Jiro is more driven than his teammates – he’s not a clan kid or from a konoha family. But he’s also more calm, and a bit reserved. He doesn’t like having to take charge, because it’s not something he’s used to. Or something. Another topic: For Youbirin, I was thinking it’d be neat if he had access to some neat forbidden meds, like a battle-pharmacist?

There is something oddly attractive about Kiba–though I myself am aero ace–he seems like the kind of guy who everyone has a crush on at some point in their lives, even if it is a very brief crush.

Given what we’ve come up with for Jiro’s background that sort of personality does fit. I wonder if he’s the kind of person who has to frequently tell himself ā€œbear with it, I’ve had worseā€ whenever someone insults him because of his heritage.Ā ā€œThis is nothing compared to X physical wound,ā€ or ā€œthat doesn’t even make sense, is that supposed to offend me?ā€ And obviously, Jiro would get his crush on Kiba because Kiba stands up for him whereas Jiro would have just taken it.

As for Youbirin, I’d worry that the forbidden meds would edge a little too close to the Akimichi three color pills–and given that similarity, it’d be odd for the Suzu/Nohara to have such knowledge and not be more closely allied with the Ino-Shika-Cho clans. I do agree that the Suzu/Nohara clan would more likely have some secret clan knowledge than a blood limit–or their ability is so mild as to not have elevated them into one of the major clans. Like… I dunno, magic diagnostic powers. Which only helps if you can actually back it up with healing. I mean, it’d make the Suzu/Nohara clan an integral part of the Medic Corps, but not very helpful beyond it? Which is kind of the vibe we’ve been developing for their clan.
